On the first day, in the morning, admire the ancient town's charm; in the afternoon, stroll along the Tuo River; in the evening, eat blood duck.
Get a good night's sleep, wake up early on the second day, listen to the wind chimes, and watch Fenghuang in the morning mist—so tranquil it's like an ink-wash landscape painting. In the afternoon, take a boat on the Tuo River, from Shen Congwen's grave to Peach Blossom Island; the round trip takes about an hour or more, and chartering a boat costs about 30 yuan. In the evening, if you have time, you can check out the bars.
On the third day, go to Dehang Miao Village near Fenghuang, see the Liusha Waterfall, then wander around the Miao village and have a Miao meal.
Extended trip: If you want to extend your time a bit more, you can transfer from Dehang Miao Village to Zhangjiajie, where you can spend about two days. If you still feel it's not enough, you can then take a bus from Zhangjiajie to Changsha.
