2009—Letter to Party Secretary Hu Bojun, with Drafting Ideas for "A Zhangjiajie Reader"

Letter to Party Secretary Hu Bojun, with Drafting Ideas for "A Zhangjiajie Reader." Secretary Hu: Hello! Since you assigned me two years ago the research topic of connecting local ethnic culture with urban construction to enhance the city's image, I have been thinking ever deeper along these lines. I increasingly feel that your call to "focus on elevating local ethnic culture"...

Letter to Comrade Hu Bojun, Secretary of the Municipal Party Committee, with an attached 'Zhangjiajie Reader' compilation plan

Secretary Hu:

Hello! Ever since you assigned me the research project the year before last on integrating local ethnic culture with urban construction to enhance the city's image, I have been thinking deeply along these lines. I increasingly feel that your strategy of 'striving to enhance local ethnic culture' and 'enhancing cultural soft power' to rapidly improve the city's image has grasped the crux of Zhangjiajie's urban construction and future development, and is of great strategic significance. Following your approach, in recent years relevant departments have done some work in this area (such as 'clothing and capping'), but overall it is still far from enough. I think this is by no means just a matter of cultural construction itself, but a matter concerning 'visible changes in three years, major transformations in five years' (in the near term) and the overall construction of a world-class tourism boutique (in the long term). If we truly elevate 'Zhangjiajie culture' to the position of the soul and banner in building a world-class tourism masterpiece, and through corresponding supporting measures implement and permeate it one by one into every aspect of planning, construction, and management, Zhangjiajie's urban characteristics will certainly become increasingly prominent, and Zhangjiajie's development prospects will certainly be limitless. In March, the Municipal CPPCC plans to hold a training class for CPPCC members and has arranged for me to give a lecture. I plan to talk about some of my study insights on the above viewpoints and strategies. After I write it up, I will submit it to you for criticism and correction.

Besides, after pondering for quite a few days, I want, with the support of the municipal party committee, to chief-edit a book called Zhangjiajie Reader, integrating Zhangjiajie's history, geography, products, ethnic groups, tourism, and other natural and human aspects into one, so as to highlight Zhangjiajie culture, distill the Zhangjiajie spirit, serve the building of a world-class tourism boutique, and thereby influence generations of Zhangjiajie people. Many comrades, like me, keenly feel that it is truly very necessary to carry out popularization work among cadres, the masses, and the general public throughout the city on 'know my Zhangjiajie, love my Zhangjiajie,' in order to change the current phenomenon that many people do not understand Zhangjiajie's history, do not understand Zhangjiajie's culture, and do not understand the situation of Zhangjiajie city, and to enhance their cultural confidence, cultural awareness, and cultural identity!

As far as I know, many places have been doing this foundational work in recent years. The famous tourist city Huangshan compiled the local textbook 'Love My Huangshan'; Changsha in Hunan compiled the 'Changsha History and Culture Series'; Yongzhou compiled the 'Cultural Yongzhou Series'; Yiyang compiled the 'Yiyang Culture Series,' and so on. The 'American Reader,' first published in 1991, has been hailed as a 'great book' because it truly influenced Americans' concepts, changed American history, and even laid the foundation of the American character. Inspired by this, the 'Chinese Reader' written by the famous writer Su Shuyang a few years ago, and the 'Hebei Reader' edited by famous writers Wang Meng and Tie Ning, both produced good social responses after publication.

My positioning for the book 'Zhangjiajie Reader': authoritative edition, popular reading material, city calling card, encyclopedia.

I have drafted a 'compilation plan' and attached it for your review. If it can receive the attention and guidance of the Municipal Party Committee, I have the enthusiasm and confidence to do this well, because once it succeeds, like the 'American Reader,' it will be able to influence generations of Zhangjiajie people.

Please instruct whether this is appropriate!

Wishing you

Spring blessings!
