Hunan's Largest Buddhist Weiyang Gaozong Cemetery—Ningxiang Thousand Buddha Cave
The "Thousand Buddha Cave" is located in Cuiping Township, Ningxiang County. It is a karst cave formed 360 million years ago, with complex landforms and a rare in-cave gorge with a vertical height of nearly 100 meters. The Thousand Buddha Cave was originally named "Thirteen Caves," and historical records say it consists of 13 interconnected karst caves. It has the reputation of being the "Number One Buddha Cave under Heaven." Legend has it that the Thousand Buddha Cave is more than 20 kilometers long, with deep and secluded cave valleys, winding and turning, and mysterious and unfathomable. At 150 meters into the cave, the Weiyang Gaozong Cemetery was discovered, covering an area of about 5 mu, backed by a large mountain (said to be Mile Mountain). The stone wall is up to 150 centimeters high, about 120 centimeters wide, and about 3 meters in remaining length. Its appearance is smooth, and it is the cemetery enclosure wall. On a nearly 2-meter-high bluestone tombstone, the writing is clear. The top line of the tombstone reads: The Ninth Generation Master of the Weiyang Orthodox Line, Monk Shangyixiaxiu. According to the tombstone text, its construction date is the "35th year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty." The cultural relics department believes this is the largest Buddhist Weiyang Gaozong cemetery discovered so far, and those buried in the cemetery's tomb pagodas are all eminent monks who deeply received the true transmission of the Weiyang School at Miyin Temple.
