The World's Largest Electric Locomotive Development Enterprise — CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co., Ltd.
CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co., Ltd. was founded in 1936. Currently, its total assets exceed 6 billion yuan, and it is a national large-scale first-class enterprise. In 1958, it successfully developed China's first mainline electric locomotive, the Shaoshan 1, and has since successively developed more than 10 types of AC-DC transmission locomotives, including the Shaoshan 2, Shaoshan 3, Shaoshan 5, Shaoshan 6, Shaoshan 3B, Shaoshan 4B, Shaoshan 8, Shaoshan 9, and TM1, as well as China's first AC4000 AC transmission electric locomotive. In 2009, it successively developed the world's most powerful high-power AC transmission six-axle 9,600-kilowatt electric locomotive and China's most independently developed high-power AC transmission six-axle 7,200-kilowatt electric locomotive. To date, the company has developed more than 4,500 electric locomotives running across China, with over 100 units exported to the Middle East and Central Asia. It is the "cradle of China's electric locomotives," China's only complete electric locomotive export enterprise to date, and the world's largest electric locomotive development enterprise. Hunan's Cradle Spring Warp Knitting Machine Production Base — Changde Textile Machinery Co., Ltd.
Changde Textile Machinery became a key high-tech enterprise under the National Torch Program in 2004. The company uses high-tech to upgrade traditional industries, effectively promoting the optimization and upgrading of its product structure. The company's four leading products — new-type cradles, KS series high-speed warp knitting machines, E2281 series double-needle bed Raschel warp knitting machines, and E2291 series double-needle bed Raschel warp knitting machines — are all recognized as Hunan Provincial high-tech products and listed as key national Torch Program projects. Cradles and warp knitting machines are its two main brands, keeping pace with first-class international brands of the same type, and their market share greatly exceeds that of competitors. The World's Largest Fully Permanent Magnet Suspension Wind Turbine Manufacturing Base — Hunan Yiyang Manufacturing Base
The Hunan Yiyang fully permanent magnet suspension wind turbine manufacturing base, invested by Guangzhou Zhongke Hengyuan Energy Technology Co., Ltd., has multiple "magnetic suspension" wind turbines with power ranging from 300 watts to 1,000 watts, making it the world's largest fully permanent magnet suspension wind turbine manufacturing base. The base broke ground on November 5, 2007, in Yiyang High-tech Zone, covering 200 mu with a total investment of 400 million yuan. China's Largest Semiconductor Lighting Industrialization Base — Hunan Hualei Optoelectronics
On March 12, 2009, the nation's largest semiconductor lighting industrialization base was established at Hunan Hualei Optoelectronics. China's Largest Thermos Bottle Export Production Base — Hunan Wujiang Group
Hunan Wujiang Group is located in Shimen Village, Lianyuan City. In September 2000, Wujiang Group invested 120 million yuan to build a medium-to-high-grade thermos bottle production line with an annual output of 40 million bottle liners in the Shimen Industrial Zone. In 2002, it invested nearly 100 million yuan to build the Xinghua Wujiang Thermos Bottle Factory in Urumqi, Xinjiang, with an annual output of 30 million thermos bottles, establishing a "bridgehead" to capture the markets of the former Soviet countries. In 2003, the company invested 130 million yuan to build the world's most advanced, most environmentally friendly, and most energy-efficient thermos bottle production line in Nanchang, Jiangxi, with an annual output of 30 million bottle liners. By then, Wujiang Group's annual bottle liner production capacity reached nearly 100 million units, accounting for 30% of the national market share, making it the world's largest thermos bottle industry leader and the country's largest thermos bottle export production base.

Asia's Largest Microcrystalline Graphite Producing Area — Chenzhou City
Chenzhou's microcrystalline graphite deposits account for 60% of China's total microcrystalline graphite reserves, making it currently the largest microcrystalline graphite producing area in China and even Asia. Graphite resources are mainly found in the Lutang mining area, with excellent quality, high fixed carbon content, few harmful impurities, and extremely low sulfur and iron content. The products enjoy a very high reputation in domestic and international graphite markets, known as "golden sand," and are a major foreign exchange-earning product for Chenzhou City. Yueyang is home to two major central petrochemical enterprises, Changling Refining & Chemical and Baling Petrochemical, with advantages such as large scale, complete product range, many flagship products, and strong innovation capability. China's Largest Angus Breeding Cattle Base — Lianyuan City
Lianyuan City is located in central Hunan. Tianhua Animal Husbandry Company in the city invested 60 million yuan, purchased 30 Angus breeding bulls from abroad, and cooperated with the Institute of Animal Genetics and Breeding of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to introduce embryo splitting technology from Canada. The first embryo transfer of 260 embryos achieved a success rate of 70%. The success of embryo transfer and splitting made Lianyuan the nation's largest Angus breeding cattle base and successfully created the "Xiangzhong Black Cattle" specialty brand, with a year-round inventory of nearly 20,000 head and an annual output value exceeding 200 million yuan. One of China's Four Major Porcelain Clay Bases — Jiepai, Hengyang City
Jiepai in Hengyang City is one of the four major porcelain clay bases in China, with reserves of kaolin, sodium feldspar, and potassium feldspar reaching 200 million tons. Its reserves are the largest and its quality the highest in Asia. It currently supplies nearly 600,000 tons of porcelain clay annually to large architectural ceramics factories in Foshan, Guangdong, and Jiajiang, Sichuan. China's Largest Welding Flux Production Base — Dong'an County
According to national welding flux production figures published by the China Welding Materials Association in 2005, for every ton of welding flux produced nationwide, more than half a ton was produced in Dong'an County. Since 2002, Dong'an County has maintained this position for four consecutive years. The manganese ore abundantly found in Dong'an and surrounding areas is an ideal raw material for producing welding flux. The trial-produced welding flux in Dong'an was named "Golden Rooster" brand and is renowned nationwide for its strong welding strength and good finish. China's Largest Purple Clay Ceramic Packaging Container Producing County — Baojing County
Baojing County is located in Xiangxi, Hunan Province. To date, more than 20 types of minerals in 5 categories have been proven, with purple clay ceramic soil resources and magnesia black clay ceramic soil resources being the most abundant, with reserves exceeding 350 million tons, earning it the reputation of "the hometown of golden ceramic clay." The magnesia black clay ceramic soil in Yezhuping Town reaches about 100 million tons. The county currently has 16 ceramic production enterprises, nearly 5,000 industrial workers, an annual output of about 80 million pieces of purple clay ceramics, and a gross production value of 150 million yuan. At a structural adjustment report meeting of the National Light Industry General Association in 2001, Baojing purple clay ceramics received unanimous recognition from experts. Baojing purple clay ceramics has been listed by the state as a geographical indication product. Baojing County is becoming China's largest purple clay ceramic packaging container producing county, the "China Purple Clay Ceramics" hometown, and the "Ceramic City" of western China.
China's Largest Zongzi Leaf Production and Processing Base — Sangzhi County
Sangzhi County in Hunan is located in a subtropical humid monsoon region and has abundant natural zongzi leaf resources. By the end of 2006, the county's zongzi leaf forest area had grown from 56,000 mu in the 1980s to 201,500 mu, achieving the goal of 0.5 mu of zongzi leaf forest per capita in the county. Annual sales revenue from zongzi leaves reached 60.15 million yuan, making it the nation's largest zongzi leaf production and processing base. Its sales market covers 25 provinces and cities nationwide and exports to 16 countries and regions including the United States, Canada, and Southeast Asia. The county's long-term and seasonal zongzi leaf product processing households have grown to more than 6,400. The processing conversion rate of zongzi leaf products has increased from 15% in the past to 89%, and more than 10 series of new products such as craft zongzi leaves, zongzi leaf fine powder, and zongzi leaf essence have been introduced.
Hunan's Only Textile Industry Base — Huarong County
Huarong County has 20 large-scale textile enterprises, with a total of 343,000 ring spindles and 2,804 rotor spinning heads (equivalent to 64,400 ring spindles). The county's total textile scale has reached 407,400 spindles, and a textile industry pattern dominated by yarn, polyester sewing thread, and towels and blankets has initially taken shape. Among them, there are 11 spinning enterprises including Fengsheng Textile, with 234,400 spindles built and 46,880 tons of yarn produced. Printing, dyeing, weaving, and finishing capacity reaches 9,400 tons. In 2006, Huarong's textile industry was listed among the province's 50 industrial cluster industries. Huarong will focus on the goal of building "Hunan's No. 1 Textile County" and further extend the textile industry chain. In May 2007, Huarong County was designated as Hunan Province's only "Textile Industry Base."
Central and Southern China's Largest Jewelry Trading Market — Wangcheng
In 2007, the largest jewelry city in Central and Southern China was established in Wangcheng, becoming China's most distinctive jewelry and the largest trading market in Central and Southern China. China's freshwater pearls account for 95% of the world's total, and Hunan's freshwater pearls account for 70% of China's total. Hunan Yisili Pearl Co., Ltd., in partnership with the Hong Kong Pearl Chamber of Commerce, plans to invest 300 million yuan and acquire 150 mu of land beside Jinxing Avenue to build the Central and Southern China Pearl International Trading Market. In recent years, Wangcheng County has made every effort to advance the construction of a hundred-li aquaculture corridor. At present, the road network framework of the project area has basically taken shape, and pearl cultivation has reached 12,000 mu.
Hunan's Largest Snake Farming Base — Zhishan District, Yongzhou City
"The wilds of Yongzhou produce rare snakes." Zhishan District of Yongzhou City is the largest snake-breeding base in the province and a nationally renowned "home of rare snakes." In recent years, Zhishan District has made full use of the brand advantage of rare snakes, actively tapped existing resources, and vigorously advanced the industrialization of rare snakes, achieving gratifying results. Since 1998, the district's annual output of fresh snakes has reached more than 300 tons, with an annual output of 350 tons of rare-snake wine, realizing an output value of more than 100 million yuan and profits and taxes of more than 10 million yuan. China's largest chili pepper production base — Jiahe County
Farmers in Jiahe County have the habit of "every household grows peppers, every household eats peppers." Through the "company plus farmers" model, the county government signs production and purchasing contracts with farmers and established "Hunan Jiahe County Sanwei Food Co., Ltd.," which uses modern new food-processing technologies to produce Sanwei pepper series products. In 1999, a 5,000-mu Sanwei pepper production base was established, and a series of products were launched, including Sanwei dried peppers, Sanwei chopped peppers, Sanwei pepper kohlrabi, Sanwei pepper dog-meat sausage, and Sanwei pepper Xiangjia fish, greatly advancing Sanwei pepper production.
China's largest edible fungus production base — Anren County
In 2005, Pingshang Village in Pingshang Township, Anren County, was designated as the county's "edible fungus industry demonstration village." The implementation of the "Hundred-Village Industry Demonstration Belt" project spurred more than 60 agricultural industry projects in the county, including edible fungi and fruit, into operation, helping more than 100,000 farmers escape poverty and become prosperous. According to statistics, in 2005 and 2006 the county added 12 leading enterprises at the provincial, municipal, and county levels, established more than 80 various rural industry marketing organizations, and saw the emergence of more than 2,400 rural prosperity leaders and industry development brokers. China's largest bamboo plywood production base — Suining County
Suining is a national key forestry county and a demonstration county for high-yield southern bamboo. It has 430,000 mu of southern bamboo forest. The bamboo plywood produced in the county accounts for 50% of the market share nationwide. The two bamboo plywood brands "Baoqing" and "Lüzhou" sell well in Southeast Asia, making it the largest bamboo plywood production base in the country, with an annual output of 70,000 cubic meters of bamboo plywood. Hunan's largest American ginseng production base — Guzhang County
In 1987, Guzhang County successfully introduced American ginseng. It has now built the largest American ginseng production base in Jiangnan, and its quality is higher than that of American ginseng from the United States and elsewhere in China, with mature technology. Guzhang County has rolling mountains, relatively high altitude, large forest area, suitable climate, and good soil, suitable for the growth of American ginseng, and intensive planting and management yield good economic returns.

Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center
The Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center is located at Mapoling, Furong District, Changsha City, Hunan Province. It was established in June 1984 and is the world's first scientific research institution engaged in hybrid rice. In December 1995, on this basis, the China National Hybrid Rice Research and Development Center (hereinafter referred to as the "Center") was established, with the famous scientist and "father of hybrid rice," Academician Yuan Longping, serving as director.
The "Center" focuses on hybrid rice breeding. While selecting new combinations of three-line inter-varietal hybrid rice, it focuses on two-line inter-varietal and intersubspecific hybrid rice breeding and explores the utilization of distant heterosis; it conducts research on hybrid rice parental reproduction, hybrid seed production, high-yield cultivation, and applied base theory; it conducts research and services on hybrid rice parental characteristic identification, seed purity testing, and rice quality analysis; it conducts assembly, pilot testing, and development of hybrid rice technology, provides society with excellent parents and new combination hybrid seeds and their supporting technologies, and promotes the application and transformation of scientific and technological achievements; and it carries out domestic and international hybrid rice academic exchanges and technical training.
The "Center" is a major source and radiation source of hybrid rice scientific and technological achievements. It is the lead unit for multiple projects, including China's three-line hybrid rice scientific research tackling, the "863" two-line hybrid rice research, the China early indica rice quality improvement project, and the breeding of super hybrid rice personally approved by the Premier of the State Council. Its research level and strength occupy a leading position in the world.
In the early 1990s, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization listed hybrid rice as a strategic measure to solve the problem of food shortages in developing countries. In the autumn of 1997, Academician Yuan Longping proposed a new idea for "super hybrid rice breeding." In 1998, this project received great attention from the State Council of China and strong funding from the Premier's Fund. In 2000, the pioneer combination of super hybrid rice, "Liangyou Peijiu," reached the first-phase target for middle-season rice of "China Super Rice" set by China's Ministry of Agriculture, namely a yield of 700 kilograms per mu for two consecutive years in two 100-mu plots in the same ecological region. This achievement was selected by academicians of both the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering as the top item in China's Top Ten Science and Technology Progress News of 2000. At present, super hybrid rice has already achieved the target of 800 kilograms per mu and is advancing toward the target of 900 kilograms per mu through means such as molecular breeding.
The "Center" has extensive international exchanges and cooperation. It has successfully held more than 20 international hybrid rice technical training courses and hosted many international academic seminars, training large numbers of senior technical personnel for more than 20 countries including India, Myanmar, and Bangladesh. Experts and officials from more than 30 countries and regions have come to inspect, visit, and study.
Nearly 20 experts from the "Center" have been hired by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization as technical consultants. Academician Yuan Longping has been hired by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization as the international chief consultant and has repeatedly traveled to India, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Myanmar, the Philippines, and other countries to guide hybrid rice research and production, and to the United States, the International Rice Research Institute, and other countries or institutions to give lectures or conduct cooperative research. After years of effort, the "Center" has developed into an international base for hybrid rice research, training, and development.
The Century-Old History of Hunan Library
In 1904, 12 famous Hunan gentry, including Liang Huankui, Long Furu, Tan Yankai, and Hu Yuan'e, published a "Call for Donations for the Establishment of Hunan Library and Educational Museum" in the Hunan Official Gazette, stating the urgency of establishing a library: "Grieved by the future of our race, pacing in the middle of the night, clutching our clothes and shedding tears, we truly believe that a library cannot be delayed for even a single day." The proposal was quickly approved by Hunan Provincial Governor Zhao Erxun and the provincial education affairs office, and it was decided to convert the original Dingwang Terrace buildings into the Hunan Library. Before long, a large sum was raised to purchase Chinese and foreign books as well as animal and plant models and optical and chemical instruments, which were placed therein. Three halls were established — books, education, and museum — and opened to the public. At the same time, the "Rules of Hunan Library and Educational Museum" were published, 30 articles in total, declaring that the purpose of the library was to "introduce civilization, open up knowledge, enable those with few books to have access to broad reading, and enable those establishing schools to have something to verify."
In 1905, the succeeding governor, Duanfang, changed the library to official operation, allocating 10,000 taels of silver from the provincial treasury as preparatory funds and 12,000 taels as annual funds, and purchased a large number of books and equipment. The following year, after Pang Hongshu succeeded as governor, a new three-story book storage building and four reading rooms were built, divided into 17 sections: classics, philosophy, education, history, geography, mathematics, law, politics, military, science, industry, medicine, arts and literature, fiction, fine arts, general books, and series. Pi Xirui, a reform-minded scholar and master of classical studies who "was handed over to local officials for supervision," was appointed as the library's compiler. The ancient Dingwang Terrace became China's first official provincial-level library. Wu Gongheng, a poet of the Southern Society, specially composed a couplet to congratulate it: "Allow me to read Cui Biao's five thousand volumes; follow others in mourning the thirteen kings of Han Jing." In the spring of 1912, the Hunan Military Government changed the Qing government-run library into the provincial Hunan Library and appointed Qiu Daonan (father of the 1911 Revolution martyr Qiu Liang) as the first director. On March 15 of the same year, the new Hunan Library opened and placed an advertisement in the Changsha Daily: "Now that the foundation of the nation has been newly laid and we are advancing toward a republic, the opening of knowledge and the flourishing of civilization should take the study of learning as the first principle." At that time it had about 8,000 volumes, and the following year this increased to 15,000 volumes. From the autumn of 1912 to the spring of 1913, Mao Zedong spent more than half a year here in self-study. At that time a world map hung in the reading room. Mao Zedong later recalled: "From here I saw the world."
Afterward, due to political turmoil, the library opened and closed intermittently. In March 1923, the entire collection was transferred to the newly completed Provincial Education Association Library on Jiaoyu Street. In 1927 it was renamed Hunan Provincial Zhongshan Library. In 1930 the building was destroyed by war. In 1931 the provincial government appointed Huang Ji to prepare for its restoration, and it reopened in September of the following year, briefly showing a thriving atmosphere. After that it changed location six times and changed names three times. In 1984, the new building on Shaoshan Road was completed, and it resumed the name Hunan Library.
Hunan Provincial Museum
Hunan Provincial Museum is a provincial-level historical and art museum in China. It is located on the north side of Hunan Revolutionary Martyrs' Park in Changsha City, Hunan Province, covering an area of more than 50,000 square meters, with a building area of 20,000 square meters. Preparations began in March 1951, and it opened in February 1956.
The museum has more than 110,000 items in its collection, including 763 first-grade items. The collection includes Neolithic stone tools and pottery, Shang and Zhou bronzes, Chu cultural relics, artifacts unearthed from the Mawangdui Han tombs, celadon from the Xiangyin and Yuezhou kilns from the Eastern Han to the Sui and Tang dynasties, underglaze-colored porcelain from the Changsha kiln of the Tang and Five Dynasties, a Tang dynasty copy of Wang Xizhi's "Preface to the Orchid Pavilion Gathering," and the handwriting of the famous late Ming and early Qing thinker Wang Fuzhi. There are also relatively many relics related to the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom and the Hunan peasant movement. Treasures include the human-face-pattern square ding, the elephant-pattern large nao, the elephant zun from Liling, and the boar zun from Xiangtan — Shang dynasty bronzes unearthed in Ningxiang — as well as more than 5,000 precious relics and a female corpse unearthed from the three Han tombs at Mawangdui in Changsha. The T-shaped silk painting unearthed from Mawangdui Tomb No. 1 is 2.05 meters long and depicts scenes of heaven, the human world, and the underworld, blending myth and reality into one integrated whole; it was buried in the tomb as a "name banner" to "guide the soul to ascend to heaven" for the tomb occupant. The 28 silk manuscripts totaling more than 120,000 characters unearthed from Tomb No. 3 include the Laozi, Zhouyi, Jingfa, Zhan Guo Zong Heng Jia Shu, Chun Qiu Shi Yu, Wu Xing Zhan, Tian Wen Qi Xiang Za Zhan, and Wu Shi Er Bing Fang, most of which are ancient texts long lost, and are of very high value for the study of ancient philosophy, history, astronomy, and medicine. To prevent natural damage to these cultural relics, the museum adopts a method combining modern science and traditional technology to protect them. For silk fabrics, it has explored some feasible methods or achieved successful experience in removal, disinfection and decontamination, insect and mold prevention, and reinforcement and protection. It has also achieved results in the dehydration and shaping of lacquered wood and bamboo objects, the restoration of bronzes, and the reproduction of cultural relics.
The museum's basic exhibitions include "Exhibition of Hunan Historical Relics" and "Exhibition of the Mawangdui Han Tombs." The Mawangdui Han Tombs exhibition includes the female corpse preserved in the basement and her internal organs, the restored huge coffin opening, and Tomb No. 3 pit and Tomb No. 2 mound preserved at the Mawangdui site. Cultural relics unearthed from the Mawangdui Han tombs and other precious relics have been exhibited in many provinces and cities in China as well as in Japan, the United States, and other countries and in Hong Kong. The museum has also held more than 40 exhibitions, including "Exhibition of Hunan Revolutionary History," "Exhibition of Chu Cultural Relics," "Exhibition of Ming and Qing Paintings from the Collection," "Exhibition of Ming and Qing Arts and Crafts," and "Qi Baishi Painting Exhibition."
The museum has edited and published Hunan Provincial Museum (the second volume of the large-scale pictorial series Chinese Museums) and The Han Tomb No. 1 at Mawangdui, Changsha (a large-scale excavation report),Research on the Mawangdui Han Tombs', 'Hunan Archaeological Collection' (1~3collections), 'Materials on the Xinmin Institute', and other books and periodicals30multiple kinds.
The World's Largest Sensor Base

The base has a total planned area of 500 hectares and a total investment of 7 billion yuan. By extending the industrial chain, it raises added value, increases efficiency, and improves the comprehensive utilization rate of resources; by vigorously introducing core enterprises and related peripheral and supporting enterprises, it forms a leading industrial chain, improves the industrial supporting system, and forms industrial clustering.
The settlement of the technology park in the Yiyang High-tech Industrial Development Zone has a certain strategic significance for the development of Yiyang City. It marks that the first national-level sensor technology industrial base has settled in Yiyang; the world's largest sensor research and development, pilot testing, and production base will be born in Yiyang; the world's largest sensor specialty and supporting market will settle in Yiyang, China; and Yiyang will become the global sensor logistics center. Its settlement is of great significance for adjusting Yiyang's industrial structure, forming a sensor industrial cluster, accelerating Yiyang's industrialization process, forming a new high-speed economic growth point, increasing Yiyang's local fiscal revenue, promoting sustainable economic development in Yiyang, strengthening Yiyang's radiation function, and enhancing Yiyang's international competitiveness.
The technology park will take Yiyang as its center and radiate to seven major bases — Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Changchun, Xi'an, Kunming, and Lanzhou — as well as the entire domestic market, while also setting up offices in major cities across the country; internationally, it will take Asia as its center and radiate to Europe, Oceania, the Americas, and Africa as well as the entire global market.
