Hybrid Rice (bimonthly) was founded in 1986 and is currently sponsored by the China National Hybrid Rice Research and Development Center and the Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center. Internationally renowned expert and "Father of Hybrid Rice" Academician Yuan Longping serves as concurrent Editor-in-Chief. It is the only professional technical journal in the field of hybrid rice publicly distributed at home and abroad to date. Hunan's First Women's Publication—Women's Bell
Women's Bell was founded in late June 1919 in Changsha, sponsored by the Student Union, and edited by New People's Study Society members Zhou Dunxiang, Wei Bi, and Lao Junzhan. It was Hunan's earliest women's publication. The journal had a great impact on the cultural and political movements of the time. Through propaganda and agitation, Changsha and various places across the province established anti-foot-binding societies and haircutting teams, and cutting hair and unbinding feet became a trend. After New Hunan was forced to cease publication, Mao Zedong published articles in Women's Bell, exposing and attacking Zhang Jingyao's dark rule. Women's Bell published five issues before being ordered to cease publication by the warlord due to its radical political statements.
Hunan's First Workers' Publication—Labor Weekly
Labor Weekly was founded on October 20, 1921 (the tenth year of the Republic of China) in Changsha. It was the official organ of the Hunan Labor Union led by Huang Ai and Pang Renquan, and also Hunan's earliest workers' publication. Its "purpose was to promote the class struggle consciousness of laborers and advocate the 'labor union' grand alliance." On January 17 of the following year, Huang Ai and Pang Renquan were killed by the warlord Zhao Hengti for leading a strike at Hunan First Textile Factory. The Labor Union was banned, and the weekly ceased publication after its 13th issue. In the same year, it continued publication in Shanghai until its 16th issue.
Hunan's Only Comprehensive Elderly Magazine—The Elderly
The Elderly (originally named Hunan Elderly) was founded in October 1986. It is a comprehensive elderly magazine sponsored by the Hunan Provincial Committee's Bureau of Retired Cadres and publicly distributed nationwide. It is the only publication in Hunan concerning the elderly. Because it stays close to life, close to the times, and close to readers, with strong guidance, rich content, abundant illustrations, numerous columns, and high recognition, it is deeply loved and followed by retired cadres, retired workers, and elderly people in society. Among similar publications nationwide, The Elderly has consistently ranked at the top in circulation, with a monthly circulation of approximately 260,000 copies.

The development and prosperity of Hunan's media, especially the triumphant advance and stream of good news over the past 10 years, has undergone a conscious transformation and inevitable sublimation from "catfish" to "mega crocodile."
More than 10 years ago, among Hunan's media, the only one that entered the great tide of reform was Hunan Television, which at the time possessed a tragic heroism and bold spirit of "standing alone in cold autumn" and "waves dashing against the speeding boat." Hunan Broadcasting's "unwilling to accept" and "restless" temperament and ambition drove its first and second rounds of reform, bringing about the comprehensive revitalization and complete transformation of Hunan Television and Hunan Radio. Moreover, the momentum of Hunan Broadcasting's "grand gestures," "great leaps," and "major development" virtually created a "catfish effect" for the development of Hunan's media and cultural industry. While the "catfish" achieved "self-realization," it also awakened the "sense of crisis" of other media and cultural industries. Brutal market competition is like evolutionary theory: "the weak are prey to the strong, and the fittest survive." To survive under market conditions, one must reform and forge ahead. Thus, Hunan's newspapers, magazines, and internet media gradually revived. Looking at the current state of Hunan's media, one is genuinely inspired. Television, radio, newspapers, internet, and other media forms are all thriving with vitality, and numerous contenders are rising together. Compared with the exploration and imitation of 10 years ago, today the integration among "mega crocodiles" is the general trend and the direction of the times. Media outlets should leverage the media cluster effect to form a more powerful "Hunan Media Group." On the one hand, top-level design should be strengthened, with a long-term vision and a strategic perspective; on the other hand, cooperation and exchange should be enhanced, examining Hunan's media development with a global vision. What is reassuring and inspiring is that there is the strong support and guidance of the Hunan Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government's "cultural powerhouse" strategy, the awareness, understanding, and support of Hunan's decision-makers for media development, and the spirit and tradition of Hunan's media professionals who have always dared to venture, dared to act, and dared to take responsibility. These are the foundations and assets for Hunan's media to continue soaring and create new glories. Hunan Science and Technology Press Goes Global
Hunan Science and Technology Press was established in 1979. Its book publishing covers natural sciences, engineering technology, medicine, agriculture, science popularization, and other fields, publishing over 500 new books annually as well as the journal Today's Real Estate. In October 2007, the Press and Publication Administration approved the press to engage in the publication of electronic publications and audio-visual products, and the Hunan Science and Technology Electronic Audio-Visual Press was established. The press has become a comprehensive publishing house integrating book, magazine, electronic, and audio-visual publishing.
Hunan Science and Technology Press, with the purpose of 'promoting the scientific spirit and advancing technological development,' adheres to the publishing path of 'inheriting traditional excellent culture and introducing advanced foreign science and technology,' and has formed a style of 'careful planning, meticulous editing and printing, and dedicating first-class cultural masterpieces.' Industrial books are a new section that the press has developed rapidly in recent years, achieving good market results. In agricultural books, Health Education Broadcast Scripts for 900 Million Farmers, Color Wall Charts of Agricultural Pests and Diseases, and New Technology Series for Pollution-Free Breeding have won unanimous praise from farmer friends for their comprehensive content and closeness to real life.
The press has established good cooperative relationships with more than 50 overseas publishing institutions, having introduced over 400 titles and exported more than 50 titles over the years.
A TV Program That Has Attracted Much Attention from Celebrities
X-Change is a life-oriented role-swap program specially developed by Hunan Satellite TV in 2006. It is an innovative program combining documentary and reality show formats, dubbed "new ecological documentary." The program combines current social hot topics, seeks out the people at the center of these hot topics, and arranges for them to swap life experiences. The two parties participating in the program swap roles for seven days, experiencing each other's lives. The program simultaneously follows and films 24 hours a day throughout, and after rough editing, broadcasts in its original ecological form. The "X-Change" protagonists, through swapping with their counterparts, experience different lives, achieving the goals of improving relationships, resolving conflicts, and gaining lessons. X-Change won the "Best Reality TV Program Award" at the Singapore Asian Television Awards, the only Chinese mainland television program to win an award there.
After the second season of Hunan Satellite TV's innovative program X-Change aired, The Pain of the City and The Reluctant Village School deeply moved Hunan cultural celebrities. The Hunan Provincial Writers Association sent a batch of literature, history, science popularization, and other books suitable for children to the book corner of Buding Village Primary School in Heku Township, deep in the La'ershan area of Fenghuang County, Xiangxi. This charitable activity brought the number of books in the book corner, which was single-handedly established by Beijing teacher Su Lei, to several hundred, delighting Teacher Wu Yiwei and the students.
After reading it, several cultural celebrities from Hunan were deeply moved. Wang Yuewen, renowned in the literary world for his officialdom novels, and children's literature writer He Xiaotong traveled to Xiangxi to have close exchanges and communication with the children, using their own experiences and knowledge to educate the children and encourage them to move forward. The Driving Force of Chinese Animation Is in Hunan
2008 marks the 80th anniversary of the birth of China's first comic strip booklet. Over these 80 years, Chinese animation has left behind masterpieces engraved in the history of comics, such as Uproar in Heaven and Where Is Mama, but what truly set Chinese animation in motion were the "cats" born in Changsha—"Blue Cat," "Rainbow Cat," and others.

At the beginning of this year, Sanchen signed a contract with the internationally renowned publishing group—Britain's Egmont International Publishing Group—authorizing it to publish and distribute a children's encyclopedia series of periodicals and books featuring the "Blue Cat" cartoon image, marking that the cultural value of "Blue Cat," China's number one cartoon brand image, has gained international recognition.
"Happiness + Education" Achieves Cartoons with Chinese Characteristics
The root of the animation industry lies in animated works themselves. Why did many cartoon images before "Blue Cat" fail to have a broad impact among children? Li Pin said: "We have taken a 'Happiness + Education' animation path, which is a cartoon path with considerable Chinese characteristics."
Blue Cat's 5,000 Curious Questions was the first to integrate popular science knowledge into a cartoon program. This form of edutainment won unanimous recognition from children, parents, and teachers. The success of knowledge cartoons made "Blue Cat" unique in the cartoon world. It is understood that the three large-scale cartoon series currently being produced by Sanchen Cartoon Group—Safe Travel, Firefighting General Mobilization, and Green Green—all follow the path of knowledge cartoons.
