During the "May Day" short holiday, Zhangjiajie was sunny with rising temperatures, and tourism was also heating up. At Golden Whip Stream Canyon and other places in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, visitors were everywhere. According to preliminary statistics, from May 1 to 3, the core scenic area of Zhangjiajie, Wulingyuan, received nearly 190,000 Chinese and foreign tourists, a year-on-year increase of 10%.

According to staff from the Wulingyuan District Tourism Bureau of Zhangjiajie City, the Wuhan-Guangzhou High-Speed Railway brought strong visitor traffic to Zhangjiajie. During the "May Day" period, the number of tourists from Guangdong and Hubei who took the high-speed rail to Hunan and then visited Zhangjiajie increased greatly. Tourists from Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Sichuan, Chongqing, Henan and other places, as well as from Changsha, Yueyang, Zhuzhou, Chenzhou and other places within the province, also increased considerably.

These are the four major scenic areas that many visitors want to tour, and they are also what many people call the Zhangjiajie scenic area.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park Scenic Area, Yangjiajie Scenic Area, Tianzi Mountain Scenic Area, Suoxiyu Scenic Area

As long as you have visited these four scenic areas, your trip to Zhangjiajie has not been in vain. Let me introduce them one by one:

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park Scenic Area

On September 25, 1982, with the approval of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, the former Zhangjiajie Forestry Farm was officially named "Zhangjiajie National Forest Park." From the date of approval, it can be seen that Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is China's first national-level forest park.

Zhangjiajie's forest resources are extraordinarily rich. The forest coverage rate reaches 97.7%. In terms of woody plants alone, there are 93 families and 517 species, more than double that of all Europe. Most of these precious trees are national treasures and rare rarities. They have a wide range of uses and great value. The plants in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park can be roughly divided into seven major categories, namely oil plants, medicinal plants, fiber plants, aromatic plants, as well as starch and sugar plants, tanning plants, and ornamental plants.

Yangjiajie Scenic Area

Yangjiajie Scenic Area, like Zhangjiajie, was at first "kept in a deep boudoir and unknown to the world," but as soon as it appeared, it became "famous throughout the world at once." After touring Yangjiajie, Mr. Yang Chunqiu, a professor at Xiangtan University, praised it highly: "Elegant, magnificent, perilously unique, majestic and wondrous... it captivates people and makes them strike the table in amazement." Yangjiajie's scenery is so beautiful and so wondrous that people cannot help asking where Yangjiajie is. Yangjiajie is just west of Zhangjiajie, only 10 kilometers from Zhangjiajie. It is located west of Zhangjiajie, bordered by Tianzi Mountain to the north, and is under the administration of Zhonghu Township in Wulingyuan. Yangjiajie's geographical location and climatic conditions are the same as Zhangjiajie's.

Yangjiajie's unique scenery
Five-Color Flower
Friends must have never heard of, let alone seen, a "five-color flower" in the world that changes several times in a day. Where is this wondrous flower? Yangjiajie has it.
King Vine
In Yangjiajie there is a scenic spot called "Ancient Vine Bay," which is simply an "ancient vine kingdom," a world of ancient vines. The ancient vines growing here are not only large in area and numerous in quantity, but more precious still is a "King Vine."

Tree Biting Stone
"Last year there were few oddities, this year there are many oddities. Sir me, younger brother, stones in the river roll uphill," these are a few lines from the folk song "Song of Oddities," which specifically sings of strange people and strange things in the world that violate convention. In Yangjiajie there is an odd sight: on a sheer cliff of a stone peak, with no soil, no crack, no crevice, and no water, three spiritual trees have grown, named "Spiritual Trees Biting Stone."

Longquan Waterfall
Walk down about 1 kilometer along Ancient Vine Bay, and you reach another magnificent sight of Yangjiajie, called "Longquan Waterfall." From the canyon mouth, go upstream along the stream for another 2 kilometers and you will see the flying waterfall. If you stop in front of the waterfall and suddenly feel cool, then as long as you go wading in front of the pool, you will again feel a warm breeze blowing, gradually making you warmer and more comfortable, truly "the warm breeze intoxicates the visitor."

White Crane Flat
When touring Yangjiajie, you cannot fail to visit White Crane Flat. Pass through Zongbao Bay, then go down along Sisters Pool, and after leaving the valley you arrive. White Crane Flat is named because the mountain peaks and tree branches are often covered with white cranes.

Tianzi Mountain Scenic Area

Total area: 67 square kilometers
Evaluation: "If one truly knows the face of Tianzi, after returning one need not look at other mountains under heaven."
Tianzi Mountain Scenic Area is also a provincial-level nature reserve. It is located in the northwest part of the Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area, with a total area of more than 5,400 hectares. Its original name was Qingyan Mountain. In the early Ming Dynasty, the Tujia leader Xiang Dakun raised a rebellion here and called himself King Tianzi, and some scenic spots are named in connection with this legend. On July 15, 1983, the People's Government of Sangzhi County issued a document renaming it Tianzi Mountain. Transportation in the scenic area is convenient. Starting from He Long Park on Tianzi Mountain, there is a road passing through Tianzi Mountain Town, Zhonghu Township, and Jiaozhiya Town in Yongding District directly to the urban area of Zhangjiajie City, with a total length of 58 kilometers; along this route through Zhangjiajie's urban area one can reach the seat of the Wulingyuan District People's Government and Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, with distances of 114.8 kilometers and 89 kilometers respectively. The mountaintop road connects with Yangjiazhai Scenic Area and the Yuanjiajie small scenic area of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, with a total length of 20 kilometers. From Tianzi Mountain Farm, going left through Dingxiang Cave, there is a simple road to the Laowuchang small scenic area.

Tianzi Mountain's clouds and mist are praised by Chinese and foreign tourists. After rain when the sky first clears, Tianzi Mountain's cloud and mist scenes are very spectacular; the surging clouds and mist form various shapes such as waterfalls, waves, billows, and floss, stretching vast and mighty, magnificent and boundless.

"If one truly knows the face of Tianzi, after returning one need not look at other mountains under heaven." All who have been to Tianzi Mountain agree with these evaluations. Tianzi Mountain's scenery is peculiar and full of peril. High peaks, large peaks, and many peaks are one of its major features. The representative king of peak forests—Imperial Brush Peak—has had its majestic appearance displayed in many newspapers and magazines at home and abroad.

Famous scenic spots in Tianzi Mountain Scenic Area: Imperial Brush Peak, Fairy Presenting Flowers, He Long Park, West Sea, Divine Soldiers Gathering, Tianzi Peak, Divine Hall Bay, etc.

Suoxiyu Scenic Area

Introduction to Suoxiyu
Suoxiyu is a transliteration from the Tujia language; these three characters mean: "so" fog, "t" big, "jeu" mountain villa, which together means "mountain villa with heavy fog." Suoxiyu is located in the northeast part of the Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area, with a total area of 25,400 hectares. The seat of the Wulingyuan District People's Government, Jundiping, is at the center of this scenic area. The scenic area was established as a provincial-level nature reserve in February 1982 (core area 3,640 hectares). Roads connect it separately with the urban area of Zhangjiajie City and Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, and it also connects with the Cili-to-Changsha highway. Within the scenic area, with Jundiping as the center, many vehicle tour routes to various small scenic areas and Zhangjiajie National Forest Park have been opened, with a total length of 54.3 kilometers. High-standard walking trails have also been built, such as Lvyong Mountain Villa—Tianzi Mountain, Ten-Mile Gallery—Wolong Ridge—West Sea, Tiantai Baofeng Bridge, and Yingwo Village—Baofeng Lake boat dock, with a total length of 9.4 kilometers. The scenic area is basin-shaped, high around the edges and low in the middle, with mountains, hills, and streams coexisting, and both peaks, caves, and lakes present. Elegant peaks, secluded valleys, emerald waters, and profound caves are the main features of its landscape. Eight small scenic areas have now been developed, namely: West Sea, Ten-Mile Gallery, Water Surrounding Four Gates, Hundred-Zhang Canyon, Baofeng Lake, Yellow Dragon Cave, etc.

Suoxiyu's landscape
Suoxiyu's landscape relies on its mountains and waters. Not only are the mountains wondrous and the waters beautiful, but the bridges are perilous and the caves secluded. There are more than 200 sightseeing points, including Ten-Mile Gallery, West Sea Peak Forest, Hundred-Zhang Canyon, Baofeng Lake, Yellow Dragon Cave, and One-Line Sky.

Because it is located at the junction of sandstone and limestone and the peak forest landform is relatively developed, Suoxiyu's mountains are not as steep and towering as Zhangjiajie's, but they still rise in layered ranks. Standing in Suoxi Town or entering viewing areas such as "Ten-Mile Gallery" and "West Sea Peak Forest," one sees stone peaks in deep ravines and secluded valleys, one cluster after another, stretching for ten or twenty li, like a long ink-wash scroll, truly spectacular.

These are Zhangjiajie's four major scenic areas. For specific travel routes, we recommend that you look at this website.
