Introduction to Zhangjiajie Tourist Attractions
Zicao Pool:
Located at the confluence of Golden Whip Stream and Shadao Gully. The valley is made of purplish-red sandstone, which has been scoured by flowing water many times into a trough shape, hence the name Zicao Pool. The water in the pool is so clear that you can see the bottom, where fantastic peaks, green trees, and purple rocks are reflected, creating a mottled and colorful scene with shimmering water and swaying green shadows, extremely natural and harmonious. Tiaoyu Pool:
Located downstream of Zicao Pool. If Golden Whip Stream is compared to a peerless beauty, the two pools are her pair of captivating eyes. Tiaoyu Pool is also a stone trough scoured by the stream, where the water pours into the pool, creating a drop. During the spawning season, fish swim upstream and jump about here, hence the name Tiaoyu Pool.
Huangshizhai: Named because it resembles a majestic lion, this area has the most concentrated scenic spots and is the essence of the Zhangjiajie tourist area. Guimen Chukai:
The park entrance is a large round gate, with stone pillars standing on both sides. Walking in here, the terrain suddenly changes, with steep cliffs towering on both sides and a clear stream flowing gently in the middle. People say Zhangjiajie is a beauty "raised in a secluded boudoir, unknown to the world," so this scene is named "Guimen Chukai" (The Boudoir Door First Opens).
Tianshu Baoxia:
On top of a round stone peak, there are two stone slabs, resembling a book box with its lid half pulled open. Legend has it that this is a treasure box hiding heavenly books. Later, someone came to steal the heavenly books and was so flustered that he didn't even close the box lid tightly before fleeing. Although this peak is not high, it stands alone, with precipitous sides on all four sides and no path to reach it. It can only be viewed from afar, not up close.
Dingshan Shenzhen:
Five peaks, each like a needle stuck into the ground. It is said that the Macaque King, brother of the Monkey King, borrowed five embroidery needles from the Dragon King of the East Sea to keep the treasure mountain from falling. These turned into five peaks, penetrating 3,000 zhang into the ground, making 3,000 fantastic and unusual peaks stand tall and unyielding.
Nantian Yizhu:
Passing through Nantian Gate, a stone peak rises straight up from an unfathomable gully, with uniform thickness from top to bottom, like a guardian of the mountain, sleek and elegant, transcendent and refined. Nantian Yizhu is a typical representative of the many grotesque rocks in Wulingyuan.
Huangshizhai Summit:
Open and flat, with an elevation of 1,200 meters, surrounded by cliffs and precipices, it is the largest sky-high viewing platform in Zhangjiajie. Standing on the platform and looking around, you can take in the peaks and the clear water and red cliffs of Golden Whip Stream at a glance. From here, you can see Heicongnao, Tianqiao Yidun, Jingui Tanhai, Nantian Yizhu, and other scenery. On the summit, there is the "Liuqi Pavilion" viewing tower. To the left front of Liuqi Pavilion, there is a protruding viewing platform called "Zhaixing Tai" (Star-Picking Platform).
Heicongnao:
Located northeast of Huangshizhai, it is a well-preserved original secondary forest. The trees in the forest have the characteristics of being "ancient, large, rare, exotic, and numerous." Its ancient and famous trees have weathered many vicissitudes and not only have ornamental value but also are of great significance for studying changes in the ecological environment.
Tianqiao Yidun:
It is a group of stone peaks located between Huangshizhai and Yuanjiajie. In a 300-meter-deep canyon there, six oval stone pillars about 200 meters high stand side by side. Starting from the first stone pillar near Yuanjiajie, they rise in sequence, then from the fourth stone pillar they descend in sequence. The tops of the six stone pillars can be connected into an arc, closely resembling a set of bridge piers.
Yuanjiajie:
Located at the northern foot of Shadao Gully, it is another scenic concentration in Wulingyuan. Here, you can absolutely enjoy the feeling of being an immortal.
Tianxuan Bailian:
At the end of Shadao Gully, a stream of spring water drifts down from the top of a cliff more than 200 meters high. Standing on the opposite viewing platform, visitors see a long white silk falling from the ninth heaven, splashing jade and flying flowers, generating mist and clouds, rushing through the valley stream. If there is heavy rain, the scene is even more magnificent, surpassing the Nine Dragon Waterfall of Huangshan after rain.
Tianxia Diyi Qiao:
It is one of the essential scenic spots of Wulingyuan. The uncanny workmanship of nature has "placed" a natural stone slab about 5 meters thick across the top of two peaks, connecting the east and west peaks. Its height, span, and thrill are rare in the world, so it is called "Tianxia Diyi Qiao" (The Number One Bridge Under Heaven).
Mihun Tai:
Located 400 meters east of Tianxia Diyi Qiao, the platform is divided into two levels. The first level slopes gently from east to west, about 100 square meters. The second level is about 2 meters lower than the first and is a stone slab extending horizontally in the air, closely connected to the first level. Sitting on the platform, you can see Golden Whip Stream and Shadao Gully competing in wonder, with clouds and mist rolling, and the mountains appearing and disappearing unpredictably, making it hard to tell heaven from earth.
Houhuayuan:
Known as a "natural bonsai." The stone peaks in the garden are in a thousand postures, and the stream flows around the peaks; ancient trees tower on the mountain, and clouds and mist fill the air, just like the imperial palace's rear garden in ancient times.
Zhangjiajie Tujia Customs Park:
The scenic area covers a total area of more than 80 mu, with a total investment of 75 million RMB. Its main projects include the Tusi City and the Bizika Sacred Fire Hall (evening party venue). In 2004, it was listed as a national AAAA-level tourist attraction and a premium route in Zhangjiajie tourism. In its Tusi City, the Peng family, to display their status, built the tallest stilted building in Xiangxi, 48 meters high and 12 stories in total. The entire building surprisingly has not a single iron nail, which can be called a miracle in the architectural history of Tujia stilted buildings. In September 2002, this building was rated as the tallest stilted building and won the Guinness World Record. At the same time, the Maogusi dance performance with a thousand participants held in Tusi City was a complete success and also won the Guinness World Record.
Dehang Miao Village
Within the beautiful Wulingyuan Scenic Area of Xiangxi, there is a shining pearl——Dehang Miao Village. “Dehang” is in the Miao language, meaning beautiful canyon, about 24 kilometers from Jishou City, the capital of Xiangxi Autonomous Prefecture. This is a magical land, with crisscrossing streams, deep canyons, and flying waterfalls. The Liusha Waterfall, with a drop of 216 meters, is like white silk hanging in the air, like silver gauze suspended on the cliff.
Here, peaks compete in beauty. Pangu Peak is more than 700 meters above sea level, with a gourd-shaped summit divided into two peaks, large and small, with cliffs thousands of meters high, a natural chasm difficult to cross. Standing on the summit, the surrounding scenery can be taken in at a glance. Here there is the famous highway wonder, the most dangerous pass on the Xiangchuan Highway——the Aizhai Natural Chasm. From the foot of the mountain to the top, the total length is only 6 kilometers, yet it turns 13 times. The highway coils like a white belt over the green mountains. Among the green mountains and clear waters are dotted stilted buildings with gray tiles and stone foundations, smooth stone slab roads, exquisite stone arch bridges, and groups of barefoot Miao women in red clothing washing cloth. There are also ancient stone mills and waterwheels, driven by water power, turning tirelessly with gurgling and creaking sounds, creating a pastoral poetic scene. This is Dehang Miao Village.
Fenghuang Ancient Town

Fenghuang Ancient Town is the county seat of Fenghuang County in the Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture.
