Zhangjiajie is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Hunan Province, China. Zhangjiajie[1] City is located in the northwest of Hunan Province, bordering Hefeng County of Hubei Province to the north. Total area 9,518 square kilometers. Total population 1.63 million (2006), with ethnic minorities mainly comprising Tujia and Bai accounting for about two-thirds of the total population. The city is too far from Zhangjiajie's core scenic area, so I suggest you stay in Wulingyuan District, which is what everyone calls the scenic area.

There are eco-buses inside the scenic area, so you can travel independently. As for finding a local guide, they will take you back to shopping stores—unless you give a larger subsidy, about 200-500 RMB per day, in which case they won't take you to shopping stores, because if they did, they wouldn't get 200-500 RMB/day anyway.
