But Zhangjiajie has so many attractions that it can feel like a riot of flowers dazzling the eyes, and you don't know where to start.
At this point there's no need to panic or rush—let me help you out. Actually, once you arrive in Zhangjiajie's city area, your trip has officially begun. You can take a look at Zhangjiajie's Dayong Bridge Park—take a walk, stroll around, soak up some sun, and rest; it's all very pleasant. Then you can go to the pedestrian street and have a look around. You can also go to the hill next to the pedestrian street, where Zhangjiajie's Martyrs' Tower is, to pay respects to the statues of our forebears and commemorate those loyal and heroic souls. You can also visit Puguang Zen Temple. In short, you can wander around the streets a bit more and see how Zhangjiajie has changed today.
After touring the city area, it's time to go see the scenic area.
Zhangjiajie's wonders don't just fascinate the younger generation—many elderly people and children also can't help but yield to its magical grandeur, especially travelers drawn by Zhangjiajie's unique style of independent travel. A large portion of these travelers particularly love the independent-travel style of touring, but worry about their own physical stamina. I've carefully put together the most relaxed route for everyone's reference.
On the first day, after being picked up at the station, the guide. Together with the travelers, take the scenic-area shuttle bus to the largest of Zhangjiajie's five ticket entrances, the "Sign Gate" (Wulingyuan) entrance. After buying tickets to enter, take the scenic-area eco-bus directly from the ticket entrance to the "Tianzi Mountain Cableway Station" (about 15 minutes), passing by "Suoxi Lake." Taking the cableway up the mountain, you can see the attractions "Seahorse Peak, Double-Faced Peak, Ancient Roman Warrior, Qin Shi Huang Ruling the World"—several very vivid sights (about 7 minutes). Then take the eco-bus to the Tianzi Mountain scenic area (about 3 minutes) to see attractions such as "Fairy Scattering Flowers, Imperial Brush Peak, Tianzi Pavilion, Ghost King Fossil, Stone Boat Setting Out to Sea, Yunqing Rock, West Sea Peak Forest, He Long Bronze Statue." After seeing them, take the bus back to our camp at "Daguantai" in the Dingxiangrong residential area to arrange food and lodging (because this is located in the center of the scenic area, it's convenient for reaching several scenic spots, and Daguantai is the best place in the entire scenic area to watch the sunrise). In the evening, interactive activities can be organized.
On the second day, set off at 8 o'clock (can be changed depending on circumstances). Charter a vehicle to Zhangjiajie's most primitive and newly developed place, "Divine Troops Gathering" (about half an hour). Here you can see the Qing Dynasty-era "Old House Site," the high-mountain hidden paradise "Sky Garden," and the most spectacular place to view the Bailong Elevator. You can also see at the closest distance the most primitive Divine Troops Gathering, with scenery just as it was before development. Because it was developed not long ago, you can often still pick up fossils of shells, ferns, and mollusks. After seeing it, come back for lunch. Because it is located right in the Daguantai scenic area, you can hike to the Daguantai scenic area to see the attractions "Daguantai, Immortal Bridge, Tianzi Seat, Divine Rooster Pecking, One Step Hard to Walk"—several very classic sights. In the evening, you can organize activities together with the guide.
On the last day, hand your luggage to the porter arranged by the guide (you can also bring your own) and prepare to go down the mountain. Take the bus to the Yuanjiajie scenic area (about 20 minutes) to see "Number One Bridge Under Heaven, Five Women Setting Out, Qiankun Pillar, Heart-Linking Bridge, Divine Turtle Gazing at the Sky, Divine Turtle Pool, My Style My Show, Small Grotto Heaven, Soul-Enchanting Terrace"—several very beautiful sights. After seeing them, take the bus to the Bailong Elevator and ride the world's number one elevator down the mountain (1 minute 57 seconds) to Shuiraosimen, then begin walking the essential Golden Whip Stream sightseeing route. You can see "Shuiraosimen, Zhang Liang's Tomb, Long Live Tablet, Camel Peak, Reunion Tree, Meeting After a Thousand Miles, Purple Algae Pool, Scholar's Book Collection, Two Turtles Exploring the Stream, Candle Peak, Longevity Spring, Wenxing Rock, Cleaving the Mountain to Save the Mother, Journey to the West filming location (Master and Disciples Seeking Scriptures), Golden Whip Rock, Divine Eagle Guarding the Whip, Zhu Bajie Carrying His Bride, Mother and Child Peak, Walking the Oxygen Bar Path" and exit the station. At the station entrance, have a good meal at an authentic Hunan restaurant. To reward everyone for these days' hard work, be sure to ask the guide to order you some better dishes. After eating, the guide can see you to the station, and with that the three-day, two-night Zhangjiajie independent travel itinerary comes to an end.
