China has many nature reserves, and the Zhangjiajie Nature Reserve is the most famous of them all.
It is often said that Zhangjiajie is a world natural heritage site, and this is because of its pristine ecology; those magical forests and mountains are all masterpieces of nature's uncanny workmanship. Zhangjiajie is extremely rich in forest resources, with a forest coverage rate of 97.7% within the park. The flowers in the park are also very beautiful and unique, such as the five-colored flower that can change into five colors in a single day, and the lobster flower that is unique to Zhangjiajie.
Below, let us introduce some of Zhangjiajie's scenic sights.
Star-Picking Terrace: After climbing to the top of Huangshizhai, you can see a round stone peak more than 1,000 meters above sea level, flat on top and suspended below. On a night when the sky is full of stars, if you stand on this terrace, perhaps you might even pluck a few stars down!
South Heaven Pillar: Above South Heaven Gate and below the front pass gate, there is a solitary peak pointing straight into the clouds, more than 300 meters high, with its tip and base firmly rooted in the earth, truly like a stone pillar holding up the sky! This is Zhangjiajie's famous "South Heaven Pillar."
Five-Finger Peak: Below the cross path, there are five peaks, each standing tall like silver needles thrust into the ground, glinting with a silvery-gray luster. This sight is the "Mountain-Anchoring Divine Needles." It is said that these Mountain-Anchoring Divine Needles were five embroidery needles borrowed from the Dragon King of the East Sea's treasure house by the Monkey King's brother, the Macaque King (nicknamed "Great Sage Who Knows the Wind"), in order to anchor the mountains so they would not fall. These five peaks are their transformed forms. Because these five Mountain-Anchoring Divine Needles were driven 3,000 zhang into the earth, Zhangjiajie's 3,000 fantastic peaks and strange mountains have stood for a thousand years without falling. Each one stands uniquely on its own, thick at the bottom and thin at the top, truly a wonder of Zhangjiajie. The terrain here is precipitous, often shrouded in steaming clouds and rosy mists, and mountain eagles often circle overhead.
Heavenly Book Treasure Box: On the mountain diagonally opposite the Entertainment Terrace, there is a stone box that closely resembles a book case, rectangular in shape, with a sliding lid on top that has been pulled open halfway.
South Heaven Gate: Nature's creation is truly wondrous, using a huge slab-like stone peak to carve out a great gate, more than 10 meters wide at the base and 15 meters high. It is said that when Qu Yuan climbed the Heavenly Terrace to question heaven, he passed through here, so the local people call it the "Gate to Heaven."
Imperial Brush Peak: Imperial Brush Peak is recognized as the signature scenic spot of Wulingyuan's sandstone peak forest scenery, constantly appearing in media and promotional materials at home and abroad, and can be called a wonder of the world. Originally, this was an inspired stroke of nature's uncanny workmanship; scientifically speaking, it is the result of years of weathering, erosion, and cutting, but folk tradition links it with King Xiang, saying that after King Xiang's martyrdom, his imperial brush turned into a stone peak, keeping watch beside Shentang Bay; while the "brush holder" and "brush rack" that held the imperial brush remained at Shuirao Simen. Yet through the rise and fall of a thousand years and the changes of the ages, "how many matters of ancient and modern times are all consigned to laughter and talk." Only this imperial brush remains!
Sky Garden: Look, everyone, this open platform, surrounded by abysses on three sides, embraced by fantastic peaks, and lifted into the air, has dozens of mu of rice fields on it, hence the name Sky Garden. Several Tujia families harvest spring, summer, autumn, and winter here, just like a land of peach blossom beyond the world.
Immortal Bridge: Also known as Self-Generated Bridge, it is 24 meters long, 2 meters wide at its widest, and 1 meter wide at its narrowest, flying across the air with uncanny workmanship. Standing here beside the bridge, do we not also feel a little like floating immortals, reluctant to leave? We are not immortals, so for travel safety, please do not walk across.
Gathering of Divine Soldiers: From Immortal Bridge to Laowuchang, you see dense ranks of hundreds of stone peaks in the deep valley, exactly like a group of mighty and majestic officers and soldiers lined up awaiting orders. It is said that these are King Xiang's divine soldiers gathering. Though myths are not reliable, such a concentrated and spectacular array of stone peaks is rare even in Wulingyuan.
Cultural Sight: He Long Park: Marshal He Long was a founding hero of the People's Republic of China and one of the founders of the People's Liberation Army. The bronze statue of He Long is 6.5 meters tall and weighs 9.3 tons, making it the largest single-person bronze statue in China to date. Look at him wearing a military greatcoat, holding in his hand the large tobacco pipe that once accompanied him as he commanded the winds and clouds, with the great white horse that once neighed toward the sky nestled by his knee, the heavenly wind blowing his clothes, his gaze like a torch. The entire modeling, color, and spirit, even the folds on the military greatcoat, are seamlessly integrated with the sandstone peak forest, standing tall with the 3,000 fantastic peaks here, braving rain and wind.
Golden Turtle in the Sea of Mist: On the back of a mountain ridge behind the rear pass gate of Huangshizhai, which can be seen but not reached, there is a huge rock. This rock looks exactly like a turtle. Look, it has a turtle head, a turtle shell, and also four legs and a turtle tail, all seemingly clearly visible. When you stop to watch, it seems to be moving its four legs, slowly and clumsily crawling step by step into the sea of clouds! The rock shines on clear days and is golden in color, so it is also called "Golden Turtle Exploring the Sea." If the weather turns gloomy, it becomes "Golden Turtle in the Sea of Mist."
Cultural Sight - Liuqi Pavilion: The pavilion is named "Liuqi Pavilion," referring to the wonders of mountains, waters, stones, clouds, plants, and animals.
Zhangjiajie's natural scenery is wonderful for its peaks, secluded for its valleys, lush for its forests, beautiful for its waters, and divine for its clouds. Among them, the green peaks are said to number 3,800, with relative heights of about 100 to 300 meters. The mountains are covered in green foliage and remain evergreen through the four seasons; the peaks and rocks resemble people, beasts, vessels, and objects, vivid in form and magnificent in momentum. Between the peaks, streams murmur, gorges are deep and secluded, and dense shade blocks the sun. It enjoys the reputation of "three emerald-green peaks, eight hundred glazed waters." In spring, mountain flowers bloom brightly and all things renew; in summer, the forests are dense and the cool breeze blows gently; in autumn, the sky is high and the air crisp, with red leaves everywhere; in winter, ice and snow cover everything, wrapped in silver.
