[Park Entrance]
Hello! We have arrived at Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. This is the park gate. As you can see, one side of this gate is a garden-style building with small blue tiles in the local Tujia folk style, while the other side is matched with sandstone peaks, cleverly combining the gate with nature. On May 28, 1992, two officials sent by UNESCO to inspect and accept Wulingyuan's application for World Natural Heritage status were riding in a car through the park gate. After driving in about a hundred meters, they repeatedly shouted: “Gate! Gate!” They asked the driver to back the car up, and while praising the gate's return-to-nature natural charm, they kept pressing the camera shutter. Therefore, welcome everyone to take your own glorious photo in front of this “Gate of Nature.”

[Laomowan] Laomowan is the starting station for the various attractions of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. From here you can climb Yaozizhai, ascend Huangshizhai, go up to Chaotian Temple, go down to Golden Whip Stream, and also go to the Huangshizhai cable car station.
Tour route: Huangshizhai
Scenic area: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park
Approximate location: Enter Zhangjiajie National Forest Park ticket station and you reach the foot of Huangshizhai
[Huangshizhai] There is a saying that evaluates Huangshizhai: “If you don't go up Huangshizhai, your trip to Zhangjiajie is in vain.” This shows Huangshizhai's position in Zhangjiajie's scenery. Legend has it that Zhang Liang, the Marquis of Liu in the Han Dynasty, saw through the mortal world, resigned from office, followed Master Red Pine, hid from the world, and traveled to Zhangjiajie. He was surrounded by soldiers and later saved by his teacher Huang Shigong, hence the name Huangshizhai. It is the place where Zhangjiajie's most beautiful scenery is concentrated, and also Zhangjiajie's largest cliff-edge viewing platform. A famous poet evaluated Huangshizhai like this: “Five steps are remarkable, seven steps are superb, beyond ten steps you are dumbstruck.” Therefore, I suggest hiking up Huangshizhai today and taking the cable car down, or first taking the cable car up and then going down from the front mountain; otherwise, you really will have “wasted your trip to Zhangjiajie.” The full route of Huangshizhai takes about 5 hours, and walking up the mountain is about 5 kilometers.
All right, in order not to miss the beautiful scenery, let's hike up the mountain, and after seeing it, take the cable car down!
Walk up Huangshizhai via the Secluded Fir Forest Path>>>>>
-
Attraction name: Secluded Fir Forest Path
Location: On the way up Huangshizhai...
[Secluded Fir Forest Path] We are now walking on the Secluded Fir Forest Path. Since ancient times, there was only one route up Huangshizhai from the back mountain. The route we are taking today was manually cut more than ten years ago.
Zhangjiajie is China's first national forest park. This term was actually introduced from abroad. As early as June 30, 1864, U.S. President Lincoln announced the establishment of the Yosemite protected area. On October 1, 1890, through the efforts of the famous conservationist Muir, U.S. President Benjamin approved the establishment of Yosemite as a national park, and thus the world had the new term “national park.” Less than a century later, more than 100 countries around the world had established more than 1,200 national parks, also called national forest parks. This was a major measure to protect the ecological environment on which humanity depends for survival. However, China, with its vast territory, huge population, and severely damaged vegetation, still had not responded by the late 1970s. In that year, a foreign guest asked the Premier of the State Council: “Does China have national parks?” The Premier answered very tactfully: “Yes, they are under construction. Please come and see in a few years.” After seeing off the guest, the head of the State Planning Commission was invited to the Premier's office and was ordered to work with the Ministry of Forestry to identify a site for building China's first national forest park. At exactly this time, this magical land of Zhangjiajie was discovered in the Wuling Mountains of Xiangxi, Hunan, and thus the first national forest park was born. According to statistics, from 1982 to the end of 1997, more than 870 forest parks at different levels and grades were established nationwide, including 292 national-level forest parks, with an operating area of 7.48 million hectares. The establishment of national forest parks effectively curbed illegal acts of destroying forest resources and played an immeasurable role in protecting the ecological environment. At the same time, it provided humanity with beautiful scenic spots for tourism and leisure. Taking 1997 as an example, domestic forest parks attracted 50 million visitors, increasing at an annual rate of 15%-20%. By the end of the 20th century, the number of visitors to forest parks each year had exceeded 100 million. Therefore, experts say that the establishment of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park was a major contribution to humanity, and its significance has far exceeded its own value.
Attraction name: Heavenly Book Treasure Box
Scenic area: Huangshizhai
Detailed location: On the way up Huangshizhai, visible after about 40 minutes of climbing.
[Heavenly Book Treasure Box] Everyone, look at that rectangular stone block resting on the peak. Does it look like a box? Look more carefully: on the “box” there is a thin stone slab half pulled out, especially like the treasure box in mythology that once stored the heavenly book and was stolen from. Folk legend says that before King Xiang's uprising, he obtained a “heavenly book” from the immortal teacher Zhang Liang. Unfortunately, King Xiang only read a few pages before it was stolen by the turtle spirit, leaving only an empty box. The “heavenly book” was stolen and the “heavenly secret” was leaked, which doomed King Xiang to fail. How could this not make one sigh with regret!
Throughout the entire Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area, landscapes like the “Heavenly Book Treasure Box” with all kinds of forms can be found everywhere. Therefore, you can fully use your imagination and give them interesting names.
After seeing the Heavenly Book Treasure Box, we will walk a little farther and then see attractions such as the Heavenly Book Hanging High and the Sea-Calming Divine Needle. If we have the chance, we will view them on site. Now let us pass through the South Heaven Gate on Huangshizhai (there is also a South Heaven Gate in Suoxiyu Nature Reserve) and go to appreciate the elegance of the “South Heaven Pillar.”
Attraction name: South Heaven Pillar
Scenic area: Huangshizhai
Detailed location: On the way up Huangshizhai, about halfway along the route, 120 meters up from South Heaven Gate.
[South Heaven Pillar] One hundred twenty meters past South Heaven Gate, in the secluded valley and peak forest to the southeast, there is a solitary peak more than 200 meters high, just like a jade pillar supporting the sky. The upper part is dotted with shrubs, the middle rock body is bare, and the lower part is covered by trees. The peak body is round and majestic, and it is named because it stands below South Heaven Gate.
