Someone asked me about my experience of visiting Tianmen Mountain during a trip to Zhangjiajie. I can only say taking the cable car up is "awesome" and climbing up is "tiring" + "awesome". Tianmen Mountain's full name is "Tianmen Mountain" National Forest Park.
Starting from the scenic area's mountain gate, take the scenic area's eco-friendly tourist bus to Tianmen Cave. Along the way, experience the spectacular and extraordinary Tongtian Avenue and enjoy the picturesque beautiful mountain scenery. Arrive at the turnaround square below Tianmen Cave, climb the Stairway to Heaven, reach the bottom of Tianmen Cave, and admire Tianmen Cave and the beautiful scenery behind it. Return along the same route. The tour takes about 3 hours.
The Tianmen Cave Opening Scenic Area is located in the middle-upper part of Tianmen Mountain, at an altitude of 1300 meters, and is the only one of the four major scenic areas of the mountain that is not at the summit. The Tianmen Cave Opening Scenic Area is named after Tianmen Cave, and Tianmen Cave is undoubtedly the most representative attraction on Tianmen Mountain. As the world's highest-altitude natural mountain-piercing cave, Tianmen Cave hangs on a sheer cliff thousands of feet high, like a gateway to heaven inlaid in the sky. For more than 1700 years, this wonder of the world has attracted countless visitors. Especially in 1999, when world stunt flying masters flew aircraft through Tianmen Cave, it caused a global sensation, with as many as 800 million viewers watching the live broadcast. Besides Tianmen Cave, another important attraction in the Tianmen Cave Opening Scenic Area is the Stairway to Heaven. With 999 steps, the Stairway to Heaven is not only the way to reach Tianmen but also a spiritual place for making wishes and praying for blessings.
Tianmen Cave, the world's highest-altitude natural cave, opened in the sixth year of Yong'an of the Wu Kingdom of the Three Kingdoms period (263 AD) when the thousand-meter cliff of Songliang Mountain suddenly opened, bright and clear like a gate, becoming a rare wonder of the world, and Songliang Mountain was thus renamed Tianmen Mountain. Tianmen Cave runs through from north to south, with a height of 131.5 meters, a width of 57 meters, and a depth of 60 meters. It stands towering against the sky, majestic in posture, its shadow falling to the north of the vast sea, clouds parting to reveal the handle of the Big Dipper in the south, like a gateway to heaven. This wonder has attracted emperors, officials, hermits, eminent monks, Taoist priests, and literati of past dynasties to visit and admire it. Through generations of accumulation, it has formed the unique and profound "Heaven Culture" of Tianmen Mountain.

The Stairway to Heaven, with a total of 999 steps, is the way to reach Tianmen and also a spiritual place for making wishes and praying for blessings. Climbing the Stairway to Heaven is not only a process of exercising willpower and challenging oneself, but also a process of understanding the journey of life, transcending the mundane, and opening one's mind. The five rest platforms on both sides of the Stairway to Heaven are named "Ruyi", "Qingyun", "Changsheng", "Qinse", and "Youyu", implying the life prayers and wishes for the five blessings of "Fu, Lu, Shou, Xi, Cai" (fortune, prosperity, longevity, happiness, wealth). People can pray and make wishes during the climb, sowing good wishes for themselves and their relatives and friends. After much hardship, reaching the 999th step and crossing the "Heavenly Gate Threshold", which implies "reaching heaven in one step and having all wishes come true", one will have the spiritual realization of shedding worries and suddenly opening one's mind.
The cableway ride is indeed great!! The world's longest, taking over 20 minutes!! The scenery along the way is average but especially steep!! After going up the mountain, Tianmen Cave is a must-visit! Perhaps after climbing Tianmen Cave you'll feel nothing but tiredness, but not going will definitely be a regret!! The scenery at the summit is average, definitely not as beautiful as the core scenic area of Wulingyuan! It's just all primitive forest, good for leisure!! But there are two things at the summit worth visiting: one is Tianmen Mountain Temple, which cost several hundred million!! Quite impressive!! And quite efficacious! The second is the Ghost Valley Plank Road!! Steep, steep, steep!! The faint-hearted should not go!! Remember to bring food and water before going up the mountain!! Things on the mountain are very expensive!! Going in summer is fine, very cool!! In winter, I suggest wearing as much as you can!! It's not just ordinarily cold~~~~
