At first I only listened half-believingly, but later quite a few local comrades recommended it again and again, so I finally made up my mind to go and see for myself. This was because I had had the experience of others praising scenery to the skies only to end up greatly disappointed. This time, seeing the Zhangjiajie Forest Farm unexpectedly excited me enormously, like finding a bright pearl lost deep in the mountains.
Climbing the mountain along the forest farm road, after several bends, the landform suddenly changed dramatically. Peaks rose steeply and green trees piled up in emerald layers. This is the true Peach Blossom Spring of Hunan, immediately drawing one into a strange and secluded world. The beauty here is no less than Guilin's, but the peaks are more mysterious than Guilin's, more concentrated, more upright, and wilder! Guilin gains its delicate, boudoir-like grace from the reflections in the Li River; through the valleys of Zhangjiajie runs a winding, twisting stream, its rocky, uneven bed giving it the sturdy beauty of a barefoot mountain village girl! The mountains are often rainy, with mist wiping across the green hills in layer upon layer, quite like the look of Huangshan. But when you see monkeys climbing to the treetops and shaking at us, the mood is completely different from Huangshan. And those sheer cliffs stabbing straight into the clouds, with dozens upon dozens of mu of primeval forest on top—we could only listen to the old villagers tell thrilling stories of how they once climbed them and sigh at the forest from afar.
The Zhangjiajie Forest Farm is located on the upper reaches of the Lishui River. We do not understand the geological value of such dense, unbroken stone peaks, but everyone is interested in the rare trees, strange plants, and precious birds and beasts among them. There is a kind of water-carrying chicken here that grows its own water sac to store water—something unheard of. At first I did not know there were tigers and leopards…… As soon as I entered the mountains, I hurriedly plunged deep into the stone forest and woods, bewitched by the beauty of the scenery. Stone peaks and stone walls stand in straight lines, their horizontal fault lines winding elegantly, interlocking to form essays—no, one could say "painting chapters." People are used to praising the beauty of natural forms through imaginative associations such as "Monkey Gazing at Taiping" and "Boy Worshipping Guanyin," and often use "lifelike" to describe how closely they resemble something. In fact, many of the rocks are beautiful in themselves, beautiful precisely in being between resemblance and non-resemblance. The stone peaks of Zhangjiajie have no end of names: Qin Shi Huang's "Golden Whip," the "Three Sisters"…… Let people freely create beautiful stories with their imaginations!
In pursuit of the beauty of painting, I have painstakingly climbed many famous mountains. I feel that Yandang, Wuyi, Qingcheng, Shilin…… none can compare with the beauty of this unnamed Zhangjiajie. Even comparing it with Emei, Emei is high and imposing, intimidating by its stature, but in fact it does not have such distinctive features as Zhangjiajie. At least most art workers will agree with my view.
It is said that because the mountain range stretching for dozens of li looks like a galloping fiery horse, it is also called Horse Mane Ridge. Horse Mane Ridge or Zhangjiajie, neither is yet famous. We await travelers to give this peerless beauty a more fitting fragrant name.

The natural scenery of Zhangjiajie Park is remarkable for its peaks, secluded for its valleys, and beautiful for its forests. Among them are more than 3,000 strange peaks. These stone peaks resemble people and beasts, utensils and objects, vividly lifelike and magnificent in momentum. Between the peaks are canyons, murmuring streams, and dense shade blocking the sun. It has the reputation of "three thousand strange peaks, eight hundred beautiful waters." The park not only has natural scenery of peerless magnificence, but is also extremely rich in forest plants and wildlife resources, with a forest coverage rate of 98 percent. It is a huge biological treasure house and natural oxygen bar, called "harmonious with nature." Plants, trees, birds, and beasts flourish together with the strange mountains and waters, forming a perfect natural ecosystem.
Here more than 3,000 strange peaks rise from the ground, varied in form, resembling people and objects, with both spirit and shape, leaving people awestruck. Streams, springs, and waterfalls are scattered among them, with dense forests and flowers everywhere. Zhangjiajie is like a huge landscape painting.
Zhangjiajie's forest resources are very rich, with a forest coverage rate of 97.7 percent. In stretches of primeval secondary forest are preserved ancient and precious tree species such as dove tree, ginkgo, Chinese yew, and tulip tree. Among the stone peaks and stream valleys live rare birds and beasts such as civets, giant salamanders, and Temminck's tragopans.
There are currently five tourist routes: Huangshizhai Scenic Area, the scenic area, Yaozi Village Scenic Area, Shadaogou Scenic Area, and Pipa Stream Scenic Area.
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park belongs to the mid-subtropical climate zone. High mountains and deep valleys, together with dense forests, give the park a unique forest microclimate——warm in winter and cool in summer, with an average annual temperature of 12.8 degrees Celsius, an average maximum summer temperature of 16.8 degrees Celsius, and an average minimum winter temperature of 9.6 degrees Celsius. The park's air is fresh and rich in negative oxygen ions. Being there makes the body feel especially comfortable, making it an ideal place for leisure and summer retreat.
