Marshal He Long was born in Sangzhi County, Zhangjiajie City, Hunan Province. To commemorate this great man, the people of Sangzhi County established the He Long Memorial Hall on the foundation of his former residence in Hongjiaguan. He Long was a founding father of New China, one of the Ten Marshals, and a leader of New China. He struggled throughout his life, risking death at every turn, and made outstanding contributions to the birth of New China and the construction of the motherland. He was not only an outstanding son of the people of Sangzhi, but also an outstanding hero of the entire Chinese nation.
He Long's family sacrificed five relatives for the revolution. The martyrs displayed in the former residence include He Long's father He Shidao, his younger brother He Wenzhang, his elder sisters He Ying and He Wumei, and his younger sister He Mangu. He Long's father, He Shidao, was a man of integrity who hated evil as his enemy and was the most respected elder in the local area. He often educated his children and encouraged them to become people of aspiration who defied brutality and upheld justice. Convinced that what He Long was doing was for the toiling masses, he voluntarily ran about for his son and worried and toiled for him. In 1920, he was killed while expanding military equipment for He Long, ambushed by local reactionary forces and bandits. He Long's 15-year-old younger brother, He Wenzhang, who had accompanied their father, was also captured by the enemy and steamed alive to death in a steamer basket. He Long's elder sister, He Ying, was a heroine both brave and resourceful. Having served as guerrilla commander in the Hunan-Hubei border area, she led the guerrilla forces in coordination with the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army and made tremendous contributions to the creation of the Hunan-Hubei border and Hunan-Hubei western base areas. In the summer of 1933, He Ying was stationed at Dongchangwan when the enemy launched a surprise attack; while covering the retreat of the wounded, she was unfortunately hit by a bullet and died a heroic death. He Long's second elder sister, He Wumei, also bravely gave her life in this battle. He Mangu was He Long's younger sister, two years his junior, who from childhood developed a character of diligence, bravery, and defiance of brutality. She joined the ranks led by He Long and He Ying and organized the poor to fight local tyrants and burn land deeds and other revolutionary activities. Later she returned to Hongjiaguan and served as guerrilla captain, and in 1928 she was killed by the reactionary forces of Sangzhi. He Long's family can truly be called a revolutionary family, loyal and righteous to the last, whose name will go down in history.
In memory of the great revolutionary marshal. In 1977, the provincial and county governments allocated funds, and He Long's Former Residence was restored to its original appearance. The He Long Memorial Hall was completed and inaugurated on March 25, 1996, the 100th anniversary of He Long's birth. On the dark marble plaque above the main entrance are the gilded characters "He Long Memorial Hall" inscribed by Jiang Zemin himself. The He Long Memorial Hall, He Long's Former Residence, and He Long Bridge form a triangular arrangement.
