Yuanjiajie Scenic Area — No. 1 Bridge under Heaven · Bridge-Viewing Platforms

About 200 meters west of Drunken Moon Terrace, a 50-meter-long, 15-meter-thick stone slab spans two peaks, with a 350-meter hollow beneath — the famous No. 1 Bridge under Heaven. The bridge is about 20 meters long, at its thinnest about 4 meters thick and at its narrowest just over 2 meters wide. It merges seamlessly with the piers on both sides. Both sides of the bridge deck and the upper ends of the bridgeheads are surrounded by lush green trees, while the cave walls beneath the bridge are sheer as if cut by a knife, with no vegetation. There are three bridge-viewing platforms, one beside the bridge...

More than 200 meters west from Drunken Moon Terrace, a 50-plus-meter-long, 15-meter-thick strip of stone spans between two mountain peaks, with a hollow space of more than 350 meters beneath it. This is the famous Number One Bridge Under Heaven. The bridge is about 20 meters long, about 4 meters thick at its thinnest point, and only a little more than 2 meters wide at its narrowest point. It merges with the bridge piers on both sides into one body, seamless as if made by heaven. On both sides of the bridge surface and at the upper ends of both bridgehead walls, green trees cluster lushly, while the cave walls beneath the bridge look as if carved by a knife, with no grass or trees growing. There are three viewing platforms for the bridge. One is 20 meters from the bridge; looking down at the bridge surface, one sees only a stretch of level path between green thickets on both sides leading to the opposite peak, with the bridge opening faintly visible and its lower end hidden by dense forest. Coming and going there is not very thrilling. The second is on the stone wall more than 30 meters to the left of the bridge. Looking down to the right through the branches, one can see part of the side of the bridge opening, but it is impossible to tell how deep and secluded it is below. If it is just after rain and clearing, clouds and mist may suddenly surge before the eyes, and their origin is also unclear. The most gripping view is after going around the more than 1,200-meter-long “U”-shaped deep valley on the right and viewing from the east across a ravine more than 200 meters away: the bridge surface, bridge opening, bridge walls, and bridge bottom are all fully visible. It is towering in form, majestic and magnificent, high, steep, deep, and perilous, vivid in both shape and spirit, truly a masterpiece of nature's divine craftsmanship.
