Introduction to Yaozizhai
Yaozizhai is located in the northeast direction of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, forming a "tripod stand" with Huangshizhai and Yangjiajie. It lies to the right of Jinbian Stream, and apart from one path leading from Huaxiyu to Laomowan, there is no other way to go. Setting out from Luoguta toward Yaozizhai, along the way you enter mountain streams, pass through dense forests, step on stone slabs, cross small bridges, climb steep cliffs, ascend the Heavenly Ladder, cross the Heavenly Bridge, and view ancient relics — there are many unique natural sights. It is named for its shape resembling a sparrowhawk spreading its wings about to fly. Its elevation is 1,050 meters. The top of the stronghold is a narrow ridge, a flat viewing platform standing in the clouds, with cliffs over 300 meters deep on the west, north, and east sides, renowned for its precipitousness. Its main scenic spots include the Heavenly Bridge and Layer upon Layer of Rocks Surging Like Pagodas.
Geographical Environment Characteristics
The top of Yaozizhai has an elevation of 1,500 meters and is known for its perilousness. It is said that even sparrowhawks find it hard to fly over, hence the name Yaozizhai. Originally named Yaozizhai (Kidney Stronghold) because its shape resembles a kidney. It faces Huangshizhai from afar, with deep ravines and sheer peaks, and the mountain terrain is very steep, yet the top of the stronghold has an open flat area — a superb natural viewing platform covering about 60,000 square meters, surrounded by precipitous cliffs and deep valleys, extremely perilous. It is said that during the Ming and Qing dynasties and the Republic of China period, this was a place where local people took refuge from soldiers and bandits, and stone stronghold ruins still remain.
Main Scenic Sights
Most of the scenic spots at Yaozizhai rise straight into the sky, making them extremely suitable for adventurers. The main sights along this route include the Heavenly Bridge, Eagle Beak, Ten Thousand Rivers and Mountains, Spear Rock, Badong Manglietia, and Jade Rabbit Gazing at the Moon.
To climb Yaozizhai, one originally had to scale the Heavenly Ladder, and also needed ropes and hooks. The Heavenly Ladder consists of two tiers of wooden ladders built by hand. Generally speaking, visitors who are young and in good health can climb the Heavenly Ladder, which allows them to take a shortcut, save time, and also exercise their willpower. Once they climb up, they feel the victory and pride of "however high the mountain, it is still beneath my feet." Along the side of the Heavenly Ladder, you can also see some scenic spots not visible elsewhere. Visitors who are elderly or frail are advised not to climb the Heavenly Ladder; taking the winding perilous path is slower but safe and reliable.
At the top of Yaozizhai, there is an ancient temple called "Jiefeng Temple" (Welcome Temple). Standing here and gazing into the distance, to the east you can see Shuiraosimen, to the south you can see Huangshizhai, and you can also see the "Seven Pagodas for Suppressing Demons."

The service facilities provided let you experience the essence of Tujia architecture, with various architectural features uniquely designed in the Wuling Mountain style offering their "charm." Overview
"Do you want to be happy? Then go up Yaozizhai!" This is a joking phrase very popular among visitors. Some northern visitors "deliberately" mispronounce "Yaozizhai" as "Yaozi." You must absolutely not make this mistake — "Yaozi" (in dialect) means "brothel." The character "Yao" is not pronounced in the second tone, but in the fourth tone.
But going up Yaozizhai really is very joyful. The ecological environment at the top is especially good, with many thousand-year-old trees and many bird nests. If by chance a bird's egg falls from a nest in the trees and hits you on the head, don't be angry — this kind of wild delight, this kind of happiness, can no longer be found in many tourist areas. Don't you agree?
In 1982, when the famous writer Shen Congwen visited Zhangjiajie, he wrote: "Perilous to the extreme is Yaozizhai, deep and secluded is Jinbian Stream. Climb higher still to Huangshizhai, and all other mountains appear low." Yaozizhai is known for its peril. It was once open to visitors in the 1980s, but later, to protect the environment, it was closed for a "rest rotation" of more than ten years, and reopened to visitors on September 26, 2003.
"Going up, you're drenched in sweat; coming down, your legs tremble." There are no cable cars, elevators, or similar transport for going up — you can only rely on your own two feet. Touring all the scenic spots takes more than 4 hours. Actually, whether or not you go up Yaozizhai, you'll regret it: go up and you'll regret it for a while — what hard work!
