When touring and sightseeing in Zhangjiajie city proper, you must not miss Crouching Tiger Cave. First, the cave contains wonders and is a place where dragons hide and tigers crouch, worthy of being called a marvel on the city's outskirts; second, transportation is convenient, with all kinds of vehicles reaching it; third, it is very close to the city, only three kilometers from the city center. Crouching Tiger Cave is named because three complete skeletons of South China tigers were once discovered inside. The discovery of South China tiger skeletons shows that fierce tigers once hid in the cave, full of tiger vitality. According to the recollections of local elders, more than fifty years ago, tigers roamed in packs on Ziwu Mountain. Every winter, they would enter the city to seek food, catching citizens' pigs, sheep, cattle, horses, and dogs, and at night they would enter the cave to escape the cold, living warm and safe lives, and thus the South China tigers were able to reproduce. Later, due to environmental changes, the South China tigers gradually became extinct.
From the perspective of natural scenery, besides the complete skeletons, Crouching Tiger Cave also contains stalagmites, stone pillars, stone curtains, stone draperies, stone waterfalls, stone fields, and various natural wonders of stalactites, wonderfully crafted by nature and vividly lifelike—some like basins, some like mountains, some like monkeys leaping, some like fairies descending to earth, each displaying its own form, very beautiful to behold.
