Xianren Misty Rain, Zhangjiajie

Xianren Misty Rain, Zhangjiajie

Xianren Stream is named for a naturally formed immortal figure in Kongke Cave. This scenic spot lies just 4 km south of Zhangjiajie city center. Its beautiful landscape has long been renowned, and 'Xianren Misty Rain' is one of the eight scenic sights of Yongding. An old saying goes: 'Tianmen snow in the east, Chongshan waterfall in the west.' Facing Yongding city and backed by Xiongbi Rock, the stream runs clear and ceaseless to Zhongzhu Pass. As early as the Jiaqing era of the Qing dynasty, local literati praised it in verse.

Immortal Stream is named for the naturally formed immortal statue in the Hollow Shell Cave. This scenic spot is south of the city proper, only 4 kilometers from the center of Zhangjiajie city. The scenery here is beautiful, long renowned far and wide. "Immortal Mist and Rain" is one of the eight scenic spots of Yongding City. As an old saying goes: to the east is Tianmen's accumulated snow, to the west is Chongshan's waterfall. Facing Yongding City in front and backed by the Majestic Wall Rock, with a stream in the middle leading straight to Zhongzhu Pass. The water of Immortal Stream is clear to the bottom and flows ceaselessly. As early as the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty, local literati described it thus: "On the right is the Dragon Pool's inflowing water, on the left is the naturally formed bronze gong; by day a thousand people enter the water, by night ten thousand lamps are lit."

At the mouth of Immortal Stream, a large dam has been built. The reservoir is very long and deep, and boats can be rowed on it. Following the reservoir channel to the Heiwan Aqueduct, on a stone cave named Hollow Shell, one can see on the right a naturally formed immortal bodhisattva, similar to Guanyin. She is draped in red and green, looking quite divine. In the old society, many villagers came here to burn incense and prostrate themselves in worship.

Standing by the Hollow Shell Rock and gazing south into the distance, one sees only a hazy expanse on the Majestic Wall Rock, like misty rain—this is the famous "Immortal Mist and Rain!" Look: the rain threads are not heavy, each as fine as hemp, falling intermittently with the wind; from where white clouds arise, mist and rosy clouds emerge. Ah! What a magnificent ink-wash painting of a land of enchanting beauty!

Transportation

Because Xianren Stream has not yet been developed, compared with major attractions that draw tour groups, Xianren Stream is more suitable for self-driving tours or outdoor sports. Although transportation is not as convenient as at mature scenic spots, Xianren Stream is not difficult to reach. Visitors can take Bus No. 8 in the urban area and get off at Xianren Stream Station, walk ten minutes to enter Xianren Stream Reservoir, and then transfer to a ferry (base price 20 yuan per trip). The water route is very short, only a seven- or eight-minute ride. After getting off the boat, you can enter the entrance of Xianren Stream Village and fully immerse yourself in the mysterious and primitive scenery.

According to the village head of Xianren Stream Village, most tourists coming to Xianren Stream only barbecue and swim in the stream at the village entrance and rarely go deep into the scenic area. The essential scenic spots of Xianren Stream are all hidden in the Xiami Stream section, a tributary of Xianren Stream. Going upstream along Xiami Stream, you can see scenic spots such as Longtan, waterfalls, Qixing Mountain, Liu Mingdeng's military training ground, and South Heaven Gate, but the road is difficult to travel, and only a few well-equipped outdoor enthusiasts dare to attempt it.
