Xihai Scenic Area, Zhangjiajie

Xihai lies northwest of Suoxiyu in Zhangjiajie, a deep, unfathomable barrel-shaped basin surrounded by mountains, with thousands of stone peaks packed like bamboo shoots into a gorge of just a few square kilometers, beautiful and magical. After rain clears in spring, summer or early autumn, clouds surge like waves, sweeping across the sky in a spectacular 'sea of clouds.' The 'three seas in one' is Xihai's hallmark, with Tongtian Gate and Tiantai as its finest sights.

Xihai is located northwest of Suoxiyu in Zhangjiajie. It is a deep, unfathomable "barrel-shaped" basin surrounded by mountains, with over a thousand stone peaks densely inserted like bamboo shoots into a deep canyon of less than a few square kilometers—beautiful and magical. In spring, summer, or early autumn after rain clears, clouds surge like waves, rolling and rushing, covering the sky and earth—extremely spectacular. This is the "sea of clouds." The "three seas in one" is the characteristic of Xihai. Among them, Tongtian Gate and Tiantai are the most spectacular sights.

Thousands of fantastic peaks and bizarre rocks rise straight from the ground, densely arrayed in the valley. In the eyes of an architect, the stone peaks are like towers, pillars, screens, buildings, fortresses, and walls, row upon row, well-proportioned, presenting a grand architectural blueprint; in the eyes of an artist, the stone peaks resemble people, Buddhas, birds, beasts, flowers, and trees, like jade palaces and jeweled pavilions, vividly lifelike and exquisitely true, like a colorful scroll painting; in the eyes of a military strategist, the stone peaks are generals, soldiers, drums, flags, chariots, and horses, mighty and majestic, arrayed and ready to march, like an army descended from heaven.

Facing this Xihai peak forest, everyone will be shaken! Conquered! It is the "jade of peak forests," a "rare treasure of the world"—a wonder of the world.

Transportation

From the bus station in Zhangjiajie city, take a scheduled bus (10 yuan/person, 1 hour) to Wulingyuan, then enter the Wulingyuan Scenic Area (ticket 248 yuan/person including eco-shuttle), take the eco-shuttle (20 minutes) to the foot of Tianzi Mountain, then take the cable car (52 yuan/person) up Tianzi Mountain to reach Helong Park/Xihai. Alternatively, take a direct bus from the bus station to Tianzi Mountain, enter through the Tianzi Mountain ticket station, then take the eco-shuttle to Helong Park/Xihai. This route saves the cable car fee.
