Mengdong River Pinghu Scenic Area is located in the lower reaches of the Mengdong River, starting from Hou'er Tiao at the upper end and reaching Longmen Gorge at the lower end, with a total length of 45 kilometers (including a section of the Youshui River). It was formed by the rise of reservoir water after the completion of the Fengtan Hydropower Station on the lower reaches of the Youshui River. On both banks of the Pinghu, stone cliffs rise sheer, ancient trees reach the sky, karst caves are densely distributed, and grotesque rocks are jagged. Among them are 15 main scenic spots, including Longmen Gorge, Guanyin Cave, Bayin Shigua Cave, Golden Lion Cave, Yuanyang Gorge, Golden Toad Cave, Broken Arm Rock, Sanyue Ding Temple, Small Dragon Cave, Dasheng Gorge, Yinyang Divine Wind Cave, Hou'er Tiao, Fairy Gorge, Fengliu Rock, and Laosi Rock, and it has long enjoyed the reputation of the “Little Three Gorges.” In the valleys on both banks there are many rare birds and animals and rare plants, making it a natural botanical and zoological garden. It has now been listed as one of the ten major scenic areas of Hunan.
