Tianmen Painted Wall

Tianmen Painted Wall

Two kilometers north along the road from Yuzuan Peak, the stone walls on both banks of the stream valley rise steeply like cut cliffs, a thousand fathoms high, with patterns in the rock like paintings in alternating blue and white, set off by ancient trees and green grass, like a painted screen. This is the 'Tianmen Painted Wall'. Past it, three stone peaks stand closely linked — the 'Interdependent Rocks', over 200 m high, vividly resembling three stone figures leaning on one another: the front one a Miao girl with silver headdress and pleated floral skirt, the one close behind with a flowered turban.

From Yuzuan Peak, follow the highway north for 2 kilometers, and you will see that the stone walls on both banks of the stream valley are as steep as if carved, rising a thousand ren high. Among the precipices, the stone veins are like paintings, alternating blue and white, and with the embellishment of ancient trees and green grass, they are like a painted screen. This is "Tianmen Painted Wall." After passing "Tianmen Painted Wall," you will see three stone peaks closely linked together. This is "Xiangyi Rock." It is more than 200 meters high and looks just like three stone people standing leaning on one another. The one in front is a Miao maiden wearing silver floral ornaments and a pleated floral skirt; the one closely behind is a Miao man with a floral turban wrapped around his head and wearing a short front-buttoned jacket; and the one on the left is an old matchmaker with a silk turban wrapped around her head and wearing a chest-style homespun garment.

Legend says that this was a young man and woman who, through singing mountain songs, found mutual affection and pledged themselves to each other for life, and then according to custom invited an old matchmaker to the woman's home to arrange the match. This is the scene of them on the road.
