Politician. One of the principal leaders of the Communist Party of China. Original name Peiguo. Native of Xiangyin, Hunan (now part of Miluo City). Joined the Socialist Youth League of China in 1920 and went to study in the Soviet Union the same year. Joined the Communist Party of China in 1922. After returning to China in 1924, served as Organization Director, Central Committee member, and Central Committee Secretary of the Communist Youth League, and waged a resolute struggle against Chen Duxiu's Right opportunism.
At the Fifth National Congress of the Communist Party of China in 1927, elected as a member of the Central Committee. At the "August 7th" Conference, elected as a member of the Provisional Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee. In 1929, served as a member of the Yangtze River Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and concurrently Secretary of the CPC Hubei Provincial Committee. At the Fourth Plenary Session of the Sixth Central Committee of the CPC in 1931, elected as a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee. In March of the same year, served in the Jiangxi Central Revolutionary Base as a member of the Central Bureau of the Soviet Area and concurrently Director of the Organization Department. In 1933, served as Secretary of the CPC Hunan-Jiangxi Border Region Provincial Committee and concurrently Political Commissar of the Military District, leading the revolutionary struggle in the Hunan-Jiangxi border region. In July 1934, served as Chairman of the Political Committee of the Red Sixth Army Corps, led his troops to join forces with the Red Second Army Corps led by He Long, opened up the Hunan-Hubei-Sichuan-Guizhou Revolutionary Base, and served as Secretary of the CPC Central Committee's Hunan-Hubei-Sichuan-Guizhou Sub-bureau and Political Commissar of the Red Second and Red Sixth Army Corps.
In 1935, led the Red Second and Red Sixth Army Corps on the Long March. In June 1936, after joining forces with the Red Fourth Front Army, together with Zhu De, He Long, and others, waged a resolute struggle against Zhang Guotao's Right splittism. After leading his troops to northern Shaanxi and joining forces with the Central Red Army, was appointed Political Commissar of the Red Army's Frontline General Headquarters.
After the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japan, served as Director of the Political Department of the Eighth Route Army and Director of the Military Commission's Political Department, leading troops to the Shanxi front to command operations against Japan. In the autumn of 1938, went to the Soviet Union as the CPC Central Committee's representative to the Communist International. In March 1940, returned to Yan'an and served as Secretary-General of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee. At the First Plenary Session of the Seventh Central Committee of the CPC in 1945, elected as a member of the Political Bureau and Secretary of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee.
During the War of Liberation, together with Zhou Enlai, assisted Mao Zedong in commanding the liberation wars in the northwest and across the country, moving through northern Shaanxi, and participated in formulating major principles and policies such as land reform. In April 1949, served as Honorary Chairman of the New Democratic Youth League of China.
Died of illness in Beijing on October 27, 1950. His major works are compiled in "Selected Works of Ren Bishi."
The "Ren Bishi Memorial Hall," covering 80,000 square meters, consists of four major sections: exhibition area, memorial area, service area, and leisure area. The 1,200-square-meter exhibition area displays over 400 physical objects and photographs, showcasing the glorious achievements of Comrade Ren Bishi from when he devoted himself to the revolution in 1920 to his untimely death in 1950. The bronze statue of Ren Bishi standing in the square, cane in hand yet striding forward with head held high, gazes ahead with bright, piercing eyes. The newly built "Hermit Villa" with complete facilities has over 40,000 square meters of green space, and its architectural complex blends ethnic style with modern rhythm.
The former residence of Ren Bishi is located beside National Highway 107 and is a national key cultural relic protection unit. The residence houses autograph inscriptions by Party and state leaders including Mao Zedong, Liu Shaoqi, Zhou Enlai, Zhu De, and Ye Jianying. The plaque "Former Residence of Comrade Ren Bishi," inscribed by Deng Xiaoping in 1981, hangs high above the entrance.
The former residence of Ren Bishi was first built in the late Qing Dynasty and has a history of over two hundred years. It has three sections from front to back, with 37 rooms arranged in neat rows, forming its own courtyard. The residence is surrounded by mountains on three sides, with layered green hills and enchanting scenery. The pond at the entrance has jade-like clear water, where visitors can imagine and appreciate the collective lifestyle of a wealthy rural family of old.
Within the residence, 7 rooms are where Ren Bishi lived, studied, and spent his youth. Still preserved are the desk where he bent over his studies practicing calligraphy and painting, as well as his bed and mosquito net. In particular, the butterfly-style double-stove firewood cooking range in the kitchen is now truly a rare sight.
The former residence has also seen the construction of a bronze statue of Bi Shi and an archway. The Ren Bishi Memorial Hall, newly built with the approval of the Party Central Committee and the State Council at an investment of over 40 million yuan, has now essentially completed its main structure; it was able to formally receive visitors by the end of 2002, and was fully opened to tourists on the eve of the 100th anniversary of Ren Bishi's birth in 2004. Comrade Ren Bishi was a founding father of the Communist Party of China and the People's Republic, and nearly 100,000 visitors come to pay their respects each year. In 1991, General Secretary Jiang Zemin personally visited the former residence to pay his respects and wrote an inscription in his own hand. Wang Zhen, Liao Hansheng, Fei Xiaotong, and many other central leaders, along with nearly 100,000 visitors, have come here to commemorate Comrade Bi Shi's great achievements.
