The park is located on Dayun Mountain at the border of Yueyang and Linxiang counties (cities) in northern Hunan. Dayun Mountain is a northwestern branch of the Mufu range and has been a famous scenic spot and Daoist cave-heaven in Jiangnan since ancient times. Records describe it as winding through seventy-two peaks, with an elevation of 911.1 meters.
Dayun Mountain combines forest leisure, sightseeing, summer retreats, and religious pilgrimage, making it an ideal destination for people seeking a return to nature and eco-tourism. It was upgraded to a national forest park in 1996. The park currently covers 1,180.6 hectares, of which the core sightseeing area is 340 hectares. It is planned into two major scenic areas—Zushi Hall and Zhenjun Hall—with 48 scenic spots. The mountain has 1,230 species of plants in 16 families and 35 genera, over 20 kinds of green foods such as fern, smoked bamboo shoots, and berry bean dregs, and 12 species of ancient and rare trees. There were once 28 temples, of which 6 have now been approved for reopening. There are 8 county-level cultural heritage protection units and 1 provincial-level cultural heritage protection unit (Three Battles Three Victories). The famous mountain has a profound cultural heritage, fascinating myths and legends, and many poems and inscriptions left by notable figures past and present.
