In Linghu Township, Zhuhui District, Ling County was established in the early Han Dynasty, named after this lake. The ruins of the ancient Ling County town are nearby. Linghu Lake's water is clear and sweet. It is said to originate from Qingquan Mountain. Nearby residents draw lake water to cook glutinous rice and brew wine—the ancient Linglu, also known as Ling wine—which is extremely sweet and delicious, a treasure among wines. The Jin Dynasty scholar Zhang Zai specially wrote "Ode to Ling Wine" for it. Today, Hengyang's famous product Hu Zhi Jiu (Linghu Lake wine) is mellow and tasty, brewed using the same method.
Linghu Lake once had a vast surface area of over 2,000 mu, but it gradually silted up and shrank over the years. By the founding of New China, there were still over 1,100 mu of water surface. In the early 1960s, a state-owned Linghu Fishery was established. Now it has been invested in and built into the Linghu Lake Water Resort Center, bustling with visitors in all four seasons, making it a great leisure destination for the people of Hengyang.
