Tianzi Tomb

Tianzi Tomb

Tianzi Tomb is located within the Air Force 495 Hospital on Jiangjia Mountain. On the left side of the hospital's parade ground is a high mound, oval in shape, 11 meters wide, 6 meters high, with a circumference of 40 meters, entirely built of rammed earth, smaller at the top and larger at the bottom, appearing very stable. Local residents all call it 'Tianzi Tomb' (Emperor's Tomb). In 1954, the Hunan Provincial Archaeological Team excavated a large number of Western Han tombs on the hill where this tomb is located. A small tomb was cleared adjacent to Tianzi Tomb, yielding over 100 cultural relics, among which Shang and Zhou bronze vessels were the most exquisite.

The Son of Heaven's Tomb is located within the Air Force 495 Hospital on Jiangjia Mountain. On the left side of the hospital's parade ground is a high mound, oval in shape, 11 meters wide, 6 meters high, and 40 meters in circumference, entirely built of rammed earth, small at the top and large at the bottom, appearing very solid, and the local residents all call it the "Son of Heaven's Tomb." In 1954, the Hunan Provincial Archaeological Team excavated a large number of Western Han ancient tombs on the hill where this tomb is located. Close to the Son of Heaven's Tomb, a small tomb was cleared, yielding more than 100 cultural relics, among which the Shang and Zhou bronze vessels were the most exquisite, and there was also a piece of horse-hoof gold weighing over one jin, which was sent to the National Museum of Chinese History for exhibition. According to the "Hengyang County Gazetteer" account of the hereditary house of Liu Du, Marquis of Zhongwu, in the fourth year of the Dihuang era of Wang Mang, the various Liu clan members raised troops to execute Wang Mang, so Liu Sheng, Marquis of Zhongwu, gathered a multitude in Runan and proclaimed himself emperor there. Emperor Guangwu had just defeated Wang Mang's general Wang Xun at Kunyang, and Wang Mang's generals Yan You and Chen Mao fled to Qiao with nowhere to turn, so they surrendered to Liu Sheng from the Han army. In October of that year, General Liu Xin of the Fierce Might struck Wang at Runan and killed him. Liu Sheng rose in arms for two months and was defeated. Whether the Hengyang "Son of Heaven's Tomb" is the tomb of Liu Sheng is worth investigating.
