The Xiangxi Thatched Cottage is located at Caitangwan, Xiangxi Village, Qulan Township, Hengyang County. It is the former residence of Wang Chuanshan, a famous thinker and philosopher of the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. First built in the 14th year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1675), it had three thatched rooms, with the living quarters on the left and the study on the right. Mr. Wang Chuanshan spent the latter half of his life here in quiet study for seventeen years, leaving behind more than 8 million words of writings.
In 1981, the Provincial Cultural Bureau allocated funds to rebuild the thatched cottage, and it was designated a provincial key cultural relic protection unit. The cottage now covers 2,100 square meters, with a building area of 180 square meters. Across the top of the front of the main hall hangs a plaque inscribed "Xiangxi Thatched Cottage" in the calligraphy of Mr. Zhao Puchu. On the front wall inside the hall hangs a portrait of Chuanshan, and below it are hung horizontal gilded plaques praising Mr. Chuanshan, such as "Revered as Mount Heng." On the walls on both sides of the hall hang couplets inscribed by famous figures of the Qing Dynasty. The main room on the left of the central hall is the bedroom, displaying replicas of Chuanshan's bed, bedding, desk, seven-stringed qin, and other items; the main room on the right is the study, displaying some of Chuanshan's works, as well as vertical scrolls and couplets written by famous contemporary calligraphers and painters from across the country.
