The Hejiazao Northern Song tomb is in Jinxing Township. In October 1973, a late Northern Song stone outer-coffin tomb was excavated, with the stone outer coffin and wooden inner coffin well preserved. Unearthed with the tomb were pottery, wooden objects, bronze mirrors, copper coins, silver objects, rice, and a male corpse wrapped in large quantities of silk and hemp fabrics. Although some of the corpse's internal organs had deformed and disintegrated, its torso and limbs were basically intact, and the skin of the lower limbs still had slight elasticity. The body was 171.4 centimeters tall, weighed 38.1 kilograms, had blood type A, and died at around 50 years of age. Examination of feces and bile duct contents revealed large numbers of typical Clonorchis sinensis eggs. Testing of the coffin fluid showed mild antibacterial effects.
The large quantity of silk and hemp fabrics in the inner coffin was the most important gain among the unearthed burial goods. These fabrics were mainly silk textiles, consisting of the robes, padded jackets, unlined garments, skirts, hats, shoes, belts, mattresses, quilts, and other clothing and bedding in which the deceased was wrapped. On the lapels of the gauze and silk garments were fastened button knots and twist-shaped buttonholes, the earliest physical evidence of buttons used on clothing found in archaeological excavations in our province.
The excavation of these textiles is undoubtedly extremely important material for studying the textile technology and ceremonial dress system of the Northern Song period, and further for exploring the development of Song and Yuan brocade.
