Qidong County's Zhuangyuan Bridge is in Guiyang Town, Qidong County. There is a five-arch stone bridge, 80 meters long, 8 meters wide, and 9 meters high, spanning the confluence where the Bai River flows into the Xiang River. On the bridge deck are stone railings and a bridge pavilion. Legend has it that when the stone bridge was completed, a newly successful zhuangyuan (top scholar) happened to pass by. At that time, both ends of the bridge were crowded with people. The bridge engineer deliberately tested the zhuangyuan, requiring him to match a couplet before he could pass. The stonemason said: "The bridge has just joined, from now on passage is allowed. You must recite poetry and match couplets, with feeling and action. What are the zhuangyuan's thoughts?" The zhuangyuan pondered for a moment, then happily replied: "This student has newly passed, and hereafter will be an official. I shall serve the country and benefit the people, seeking neither fame nor profit. Elders need not worry." Those present all praised it as excellent, and so the bridge was immediately named "Zhuangyuan Bridge."
