Qidong's Liu San Temple is in the former Wujiawei Township, 44 kilometers southeast of the county seat. Legend has it that Liu San, a famous minister of the Song Dynasty, was ordered by the court to go to Liuzhou to take up a post. He traveled by boat, dusty and weary, and when the boat reached the Deicai Village section of Hezhou Town, Lord Liu San asked the crew of passing boats what place this was. They answered: "Jiuzhou" (i.e., Jiuzhou Village in Qiyang). Lord Liu San misheard it as "Liuzhou" and immediately disembarked to investigate. When he saw the dilapidated scene here, after coming ashore he kicked the horse's head, and a footprint immediately appeared in the stone on the horse's head. Liu San died of rage. When local residents learned that such a high official had died here, they found a quiet place on a hill 500 meters away and dug an empty grave to prepare for his burial. On the day of burial, the residents burned paper money at the place where he came ashore, but the smoke came out from the grave site. So the residents built a small temple to commemorate him.
On the eve of Liberation, in this place called Jiuzhou, a poor man working for a landlord stole the landlord's things. When the landlord found out, he wanted to execute him. Learning of this, the man fled overnight to hide in the small temple and vowed that if he could survive, he would repay the kindness in the future. Afterwards, not only did the man survive, but he also became wealthy. Upon returning, he voluntarily donated money to rebuild it. After this story spread, incense has continued here without interruption. Around the 15th day of the 8th lunar month each year, more than ten thousand people from Guangxi, Liuzhou, Changning, Hengyang, Qiyang, Qidong, and other places come to burn incense and worship.
