More than 70 kilometers from Yueyang, it originates in the Mufu Mountains of Jiangxi, with a total length of 253 kilometers, finally flowing into Dongting Lake. On both banks of the Miluo River are whitewashed village houses, red peach blossoms and green willows, simple folk customs, and lush water plants, possessing the typical appearance of a Jiangnan water town. There are historical sites such as Qu Yuan's Tomb and Quzi Temple.
Qu Yuan was born around 340 BC into an aristocratic family in Lepingli, Zigui, Hubei. He was "widely learned and strongly determined, clear about governance and disorder, and skilled in speech and expression." In his youth, he became the "Zuotu" of the State of Chu. Because he "reformed internal administration and made laws and institutions clear," he was rejected by reactionary aristocrats and exiled to the south of the Yangtze River. In the end, he wandered to the banks of the Miluo River, where he spent the last nine years of his life. It is said that his immortal poems Li Sao, Jiu Ge, and some chapters of Jiu Zhang were all written in the area along the Miluo River. In 278 BC, on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, Qu Yuan, holding a stone to his chest, threw himself into the Miluo River to express the noble aspiration of "all others are drunk while I alone am sober" and to refuse to join the world in its muddy ways.

It is said that after Qu Yuan threw himself into the river, the people along the banks rowed boats to rescue him. Later this evolved into the custom of holding dragon boat races on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month each year, using this method to commemorate the great patriot Qu Yuan. By the Han Dynasty, local people built a Quzi Temple on Yusi Mountain by the Miluo River to commemorate Qu Yuan. The existing Quzi Temple was rebuilt during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty.
