Linxiang is located in the northeastern corner of Hunan, with the Yangtze River waterway to the northwest facing Jianli and Honghu of Hubei across the river; to the southeast it relies on the Mufu Mountains and borders Yueyang County and Tongcheng, Chongyang, and Chibi of Hubei; on the east, west, and north it is embedded in Hubei territory, controlling the throat between Hunan and Hubei. Since ancient times it has been a place contested by strategists and is known as the "Gateway to Northern Hunan."
Linxiang has a long history. Before the Zhou Dynasty it was a place where the Sanmiao clan lived; in the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods it belonged to Chu; in the Qin Dynasty it belonged to Changsha; in the Western Han it was Xiajun; in the Jin it belonged to Baling; in the Five Dynasties the Wangchao Farm was established; in the Song it was elevated to Wangchao County; in 996 AD it was changed to Linxiang County, with the county seat at Lucheng, called Xiangmei. In the Ming Dynasty there were the "Eight Scenes of Xiangmei," and the Qing scholar Peng Zilan wrote "Xiangmei Poetry Draft." In 1930 the county seat moved to Chang'an, and in 1992 the county was abolished and a city established. The city area is 1,754 square kilometers, governing 14 towns and 9 townships, with a total population of 500,000.
