Huang Gai Lake is located in the northeastern part of Linxiang, divided by the lake from Chibi of Hubei for governance, bordered by Jiangnan Town and Chengfeng Township to the south, and facing Honghu City of Hubei across the river to the north along the Yangtze. Huang Gai Lake is one of the ancient battlefields of the Three Kingdoms' Battle of Red Cliffs.
The allusion "Zhou Yu beats Huang Gai, one is willing to beat, one is willing to be beaten" originates from this place. Huang Gai Lake, with 130,000 mu of water surface, is where the Eastern Wu general Huang Gai trained his naval forces. Huang Gai's bitter-torture stratagem succeeded, and Sun Quan rewarded him according to merit, granting the lake as his fief, hence the lake was named after the person and the place named after the lake.
According to the Tongzhi "Linxiang County Gazetteer" of the Qing Dynasty: "It receives Mati Lake water to the east, Henghekou water to the west, Yuantan River water to the south, Zhongzhai Lake water to the southwest, and Puqi and Jiayu water to the northeast, stretching fifty or sixty li vertically and horizontally. It got its name because Huang Gai stationed troops here during the Battle of Red Cliffs."
Within Huang Gai Lake there are the "Eight Scenes of Huang Gai," including Xubai Evening Bell, Tuanshan Drum Terrace, Xiangmiao Rising Smoke, Ninghua Autumn Moon, Luohu Hidden Spring, Jitou Sunset, Xijiao Falling Geese, and Liuhe Lights, as well as a group of historical relics related to Huang Gai such as Xubai Temple, Xianggong Temple, Ninghua Tower, and Qixi Tower. Unfortunately, most have been destroyed. The lakes and mountains within are elegant and the scenery is wonderfully beautiful.
At present, domestic and foreign merchants are targeting Huang Gai Lake's tourism resources and rich historical and cultural heritage, beginning to restore a group of historical sites such as the ancient Huang Gai Temple and General Terrace, and vigorously developing tourism.
