Archways and memorial arches were physical symbols of feudal society. Whether in city or countryside, they were everywhere, but generally rather simple. In Xiangyin County, the two archways "Taihe Yuanqi" and "Solemn Respect" in front of and behind the Top Scholar Bridge at the Chengguan Cinema far exceeded the level of ordinary archways. They are the same age as the Top Scholar Bridge and are both built of block stone. The entire archway uses only stone tenon structures, and although several hundred years have passed, it has not shifted in the slightest. During the War of Resistance Against Japan, Japanese planes bombed the city indiscriminately, and shrapnel only scraped a few stone surfaces, leaving axe-cut marks, while the entire archway stood firm and unmoved. This is enough to show the superb level of our country's ancient stoneworking skills.
