On the day the Yuanpu Tower in Xiangyin, built with an investment of over 4 million yuan over a year and a half, opened to the public, more than 5,000 local residents came one after another to climb the tower, gaze into the distance, and enjoy the scenery and leisure. The name "Yuanpu Tower" comes from "Yuanpu Guifan" (Returning Sails at Distant Shores), one of the ancient "Eight Views of Xiaoxiang." Since the Northern Song Dynasty, the "Eight Views of Xiaoxiang"—including Xiaoxiang Night Rain, Returning Sails at Distant Shores, and Dongting Autumn Moon—have been recognized as famous landscapes of Hunan Province. The "Returning Sails at Distant Shores" scene, located at the lower reaches of the Xiangjiang River by the riverside of Xiangyin County town, is renowned both at home and abroad. It depicts a poetic and picturesque scene of boats returning at dusk in a water town. For over a thousand years, passing men of letters have composed many poems on this theme, including masterpieces by famous writers. To give this landscape new meaning, in December 2003, Xiangyin invested over 4 million yuan to build a viewing tower beside the Xiangyin Xiangjiang Bridge, naming it "Yuanpu Tower." The main tower has three stories, complemented by attached buildings. Here citizens can compose poetry and paint, or enjoy tea while admiring the evening return scene of "clear mist rippling over waves, sunset glow reflecting on water" and "a few sails descending from the horizon."
