The site of the Wenjiashi meeting of the Autumn Harvest Uprising is a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level. It is the Liren School, located at the west end of Wenjiashi Town, Liuyang County. In September 1927, after the Hunan-Jiangxi border Autumn Harvest Uprising forces failed in attacking the central city, the various units led by Mao Zedong met at Wenjiashi. On September 19, Mao Zedong presided over a meeting of the Front Committee of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee at Liren School, deciding to abandon the central city and major transportation routes, and to change the troops' action plan from the original capture of Changsha to a march toward southern Hunan, in order to preserve strength and accumulate power. The next day, at the meeting rally, Mao Zedong made a mobilization speech to all the uprising fighters on behalf of the Front Committee, and then led the troops south. En route, due to changing circumstances, the troops went up Jinggangshan, thereby creating the Jinggangshan Revolutionary Base Area.
From 1927 to 1930, Wenjiashi was mostly a base of activity for the workers' and peasants' revolutionary army. During this period, the workers' and peasants' revolutionary armed forces wrote many revolutionary slogans on the walls of the buildings of Liren School. Those still well preserved include "Down with the local tyrants and divide the land" written by the Autumn Harvest Uprising forces in 1927, and the Ten Great Political Program promulgated by the Soviet government in 1930, more than 10 in all, all bearing witness to history. The small lane where the slogans were written was later called Slogan Lane. Liren School was built in the 21st year of the Daoguang era of the Qing Dynasty (1841), originally named Wenhua Academy, and renamed Liren School in 1912. The site faces north and sits south, covering about 5,000 square meters. It was repaired in 1964, restoring the site of the Front Committee meeting, the bedrooms of Mao Zedong and other main military leaders, the soldiers' quarters and kitchen, and the meeting parade ground. In 1977, the "Wenjiashi Meeting of the Autumn Harvest Uprising Memorial Hall" was built on the west side of the site, covering 1,040 square meters, displaying a large number of relics and photographs of the Autumn Harvest Uprising as well as materials relating to Mao Zedong and Zhu De leading troops to victory over the enemy at Wenjiashi in 1930 and the formation of the First Front Army of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army.
