The site of the Chuanshan Society is on Zhongshan East Road in Changsha City, Hunan. During the Guangxu era of the Qing Dynasty (1875–1908) it was Zeng Guofan's ancestral hall. In 1914, Liu Weilu and others, to commemorate Wang Chuanshan and expound his thought, initiated and organized the Chuanshan Society here. The site is a single-story, three-courtyard siheyuan with a brick-and-wood structure, a mountain-shaped gable wall, small green tiles, red-lacquered doors and windows, and square brick flooring, appearing very elegant amid the busy market. In 1921, Mao Zedong, He Shuheng, and others, in order to gather talent and train cadres, used the site and funds of the Chuanshan Society to found the Self-Study University, named by Cai Yuanpei, with Li Da as its head, and Li Weihan, Xia Xi, Xia Minghan, and others worked here. In November 1923, the Self-Study University was closed by the warlord Zhao Hengti. After 1964, the site underwent repeated repairs and has been opened to the public.
