The Zibei Pavilion is at the right front of today's Hunan University square at the foot of Yuelu Mountain. It was built in the 27th year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1688 AD), initiated by Changsha County Deputy Zhao Ning. It takes the meaning of "if one climbs high, one must start from the low," hence the name. The plan is square, oriented east-west, brick-and-wood structure, double-eaved hip-and-gable roof, red pillars and green tiles, upturned eaves, carved beams and painted rafters, richly decorated. Li Ba of the Qing Dynasty wrote the Zibei Inscription: "I have heard of the sage's teaching, climbing high starts from the low. In daily ethics and ordinary life, the common people follow likewise. Following practice, transformation is inherent. What difference from a wall, what wonder in beauty and richness. Do not grieve over the distant road, do not weep at the fork. Step by step learning from below, the foundation of becoming a sage."
