At the western foot of Miaogaofeng in Changsha stands an elegant and solemn campus facing Yuelu Academy across the river. This is Mao Zedong's alma mater—the Hunan Provincial First Normal School. In December 1903, the academy was abolished and the Hunan Central Road Normal School was established. After the Xinhai Revolution, it was renamed the Public First Normal School. In 1914, the Public Fourth Normal School was merged into it, and it was renamed the Hunan Provincial First Normal School. Kong Zhaoshou, a student who had studied in Japan, served twice as principal. He appointed people on merit alone and engaged progressive-minded teachers such as Yang Changji, Xu Teli, Fang Weixia, Wang Jifan, and Li Jinxi, nurturing a group of outstanding talents including Mao Zedong, Cai Hesen, He Shuheng, Chen Chang, Luo Xuezan, Zhou Shizhao, Zhang Kundi, Li Weihan, and Guo Liang.

In 1968 it was restored to its original appearance, and an exhibition hall was built. Mao Zedong's classroom, auditorium, study room, and dormitory from his student days, the well where he took cold-water baths, the "Junzi Pavilion" where he slept outdoors and held discussions, the "Workers' Night School," and the "Primary School Headmaster's" office have all been restored to their original state. On display are important artifacts including Mao Zedong's "Lecture Notes," the "Night School Diary," and books, letters, and group photographs he read and annotated. It is now a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit.
