Hunan Martyrs' Park is located by the Liuyang River in the northeast part of the city, with a total area of 153.3 hectares, of which 67.6 hectares is water. It is currently the largest comprehensive park in the province combining commemorative and recreational functions. The park consists of two parts: the memorial area and the recreational area. In the memorial area, amid towering pines and cypresses, stands the 58.7-meter-high Martyrs' Memorial Tower, with the inscription "Hunan Martyrs' Park Monument" carved on the tower body in Chairman Mao Zedong's handwriting. The memorial hall displays a roster of more than 100,000 martyrs from the province and portraits of more than 90 martyrs. On the hill east of the tower is a Song Dynasty-style corridor memorial pavilion that echoes it, solemn and majestic, magnificent and spectacular.
In the recreational area, the woods are verdant and winding paths lead to secluded spots. Nianjia Lake especially attracts visitors. Whether strolling along the covered bridge of Hunan or boating around the island in the middle of the lake, you can enjoy the charming lake and mountain scenery and freely indulge in the elegant pleasure of returning to nature.
In recent years, the Hunan Folk Culture Village has been built in the northeast corner of the park, covering 5 hectares, nestled against hills and beside water, with crisscrossing ravines and cascading waterfalls. In the woods are gathered six village compounds of the Tujia, Miao, Dong, Yao, Bai, and Han ethnic groups. The enchanting scenery, exquisite architecture, and unique customs bring visitors into a simple and magical realm.
The Hunan Martyrs' Park Monument, as the thematic symbol of the park's memorial area, consists of two parts: the tower above and the hall below. The tower has an octagonal plan, and the south-facing front of the tower body is inlaid with a white marble tablet bearing Mao Zedong's handwriting "Hunan Martyrs' Monument." The lower part is the memorial hall. Its plan is an irregular octagon, with niches at the four corners, and a sacrificial hall at the rear, where a white jade foundation stone and inscription are erected. The hall ceiling uses dougong brackets and a caisson. The east and west wings are memorial exhibition halls. The top of the tower has vermilion dougong brackets supporting an octagonal glazed pointed treasure top, while the rest is flat-roofed, with green glazed openwork floral ridges on the parapet. The tower and hall are entirely faced with granite, and on both sides of the stone steps in front of the hall are placed a whole block of granite stone ding. To the south is a platform, with stone railings, ramp heads, niches, and double-turn stone steps on the outside.
