The bronze statue of Mao Zedong is located in the center of Shaoshanchong, between the Memorial Hall, the Mao Family Ancestral Hall, and the Shaoshan Hotel. The statue area covers 5,200 square meters and was a key tribute project approved by the CPC Central Committee to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Comrade Mao Zedong's birth. This place was originally a fertile field, flat and open, surrounded and protected by mountains. Shaofeng Peak stands in the distance, tall and upright; the great Yunfutuo Mountain is majestic; the Eighteen Arhat Mountains stretch in winding succession; and Heishizhai stands firm as iron. Set off by the mountains, the bronze statue appears all the more magnificent.
The bronze statue of Mao Zedong weighs 3.7 tons, with a statue height of 6 meters and a base height of 4.1 meters, totaling 10.1 meters, symbolizing "10.1" National Day and even more symbolizing that Mao Zedong is the founder of New China. The statue faces southeast, wearing a Zhongshan suit, with a "Chairman" badge on the left chest, holding a manuscript in hand, eyes bright, smiling, looking straight ahead, standing toweringly—successfully reproducing the demeanor of the people's leader Mao Zedong at the founding ceremony of the People's Republic of China. On the front of the brown-red marble base is engraved in five gilded characters "Comrade Mao Zedong," inscribed in 1992 by Jiang Zemin, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, President of the State, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission.
The bronze statue was designed by the famous sculptor and director of the National Art Museum of China, Liu Kaiqu, and his outstanding disciple, national first-class artist Cheng Yunxian, and was cast by the Nanjing Chenguang Machinery Factory of the Ministry of Aerospace Industry, a national first-class enterprise.
