Songshan No. 1 Building is located in Shaoshanchong, one kilometer from Mao Zedong's former residence. Amidst a sea of green pines and bamboo, following the path upward and crossing a small bridge, one enters Songshan. In the bamboo grove appears a circular archway inscribed with Mao Zedong's own calligraphy reading "Former Home"—this is Songshan No. 1.
Passing through the archway, one sees ancient pines blocking out the sky, camphor trees dripping with verdant green, small birds singing joyfully in the grove, and a gentle breeze carrying waves of subtle fragrance. Songshan No. 1 Building stands here nestled between mountain and water; though called a building, it is actually a single-story house of plain gray brick and tile with an unassuming exterior.
The No. 1 Building was constructed in 1958, with an area of over 500 square meters, containing a bedroom, reception room, barber room, dining room, entertainment room, and all other facilities complete. On June 25, 1959, Mao Zedong rode in a gray Zim limousine into Songshan No. 1, where he spent two unforgettable days. During these two days, he fully savored the fragrance of his hometown's mountains and waters, and hosted a banquet in the dining room for the elders and fellow villagers, freely reminiscing with his hometown folk and fulfilling his deep nostalgia.
Deep in the night, Mao Zedong, in his bedroom, lit a cigarette, took several deep puffs, and suddenly felt poetic inspiration. He then took up his pen and wrote a poem titled "Seven-Character Regulated Verse: To Shaoshan": "Vague dreams of parting curse the river of time, my former home thirty-two years ago. Red flags raised the serfs' spears, black hands held high the tyrant's whip. For sacrifice we have great resolve, daring to make the sun and moon exchange for a new sky. Joyfully I see a thousand waves of rice and beans, heroes everywhere descending in the evening mist."
After Mao Zedong left Songshan No. 1 Building on the afternoon of June 27, he never returned. Over time, Songshan No. 1 Building gradually expanded in scale, with No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 Buildings successively constructed. It has developed into the present-day Shaoshan Hotel, a large foreign-related tourist hotel.
