The Mao Zheng Ancestral Hall was built by Mao Zedong's direct ancestors and belongs to the Zhen branch shrine of the Mao clan of Shaoshan. It is located below Huangtian'ao on the roadside from Mao Zedong's former residence to Dripping Water Cave and was first built in 1776.
In 1925, when Mao Zedong was carrying out the peasant movement in Shaoshan, he once opened a peasant night school in this hall. During the Great Revolution, this was the site of the Peasant Association of the First Township of the Xiangtan County Special District. In early January 1927, the First and Second Townships of the Xiangtan Special District hosted a banquet here to welcome Mao Zedong back to Shaoshan to investigate the peasant movement. During the meal, the story of Mao Zedong insisting that his sister-in-law Wang Shulan and other women sit at the head table became widely praised.
The hall has been restored according to its original appearance of that time. It is a provincial-level key cultural relic protection unit and is included within the scope of the national-level key cultural relic protection unit—Mao Zedong's former residence.
