The Liu Martyr Shrine is located on Chengbei Street. It is a shrine built after the Xinhai Revolution by the provisional revolutionary government to commemorate the Xinhai Revolution martyr Liu Daoyi. Liu Daoyi (1884-1907 AD) was a modern democratic revolutionary. His courtesy name was Bingsheng; his ancestral home was Hengshan, Hunan, and he later registered in Xiangtan. While studying in Japan, he organized the Ten-Person Society secret group with Qiu Jin and others, advocating revolution. He also joined the Hongmen Tiandihui organized by Feng Ziyou in Yokohama and was conferred the title of "Straw Sandal" (general). In the 31st year of Guangxu (1905 AD), he joined the Tongmenghui and served as secretary, officer, and other posts. The following year he returned to China, contacted secret societies and the New Army, and launched the armed uprising in Pingxiang, Liuyang, and Liling. Unfortunately, the plot was leaked, and he was arrested and sacrificed. His remains were buried on Yuelu Mountain in Changsha.
The original buildings of the Liu Martyr Shrine had four sections totaling more than 40 rooms; currently 7 rooms of the rear section remain. After renovation, it has taken on a completely new look. It has been listed as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit. In the main hall of the shrine hang mourning poems by Sun Yat-sen and Huang Xing commemorating the martyr. In addition, there are more than 100 other cultural relics on display for people to pay their respects.
