Jinyuan Square is located on the east side of the Xiangtan Municipal People's Government building and covers an area of 100,000 square meters. It is the starting point of the unique 45-degree landscape axis in the city center and also the starting point of Jincheng Road. The square takes the dragon and phoenix as its theme, deliberately expressing the historical fact that northern dragon culture and southern Yangtze River basin phoenix culture merged in Xiangtan, the birthplace of Huxiang culture. It also coincides with the original place name "Fenglongpo" (Phoenix-Dragon Slope). The square organically combines the original terrain and landforms with the surrounding urban environment, embodying the multiple functions of a modern square in culture, leisure, and ecology.
At several entrances to the square, six highly artistic and ornamental "vases" made of vegetation stand gracefully. In the sunken square, a giant urban theme sculpture—"Dragon and Phoenix Bring Auspiciousness"—stands within it. On the stone tablets around the sculpture are inscribed poems praising the chrysanthemum, the city flower of Xiangtan. On the east and west sides, two stones inscribed with "Youyuan" (Having a Source) and "Sijin" (Like Brocade) echo each other from afar, showing great ingenuity. Stepping up the stone stairs, twelve flower beds rich in literary flavor come into view, each inscribed on all four sides with poems by Tang dynasty poets praising Xiangtan. On the hillside to the north of the square, following the mountain's contours, green vegetation has been used to depict a huge "phoenix" pattern, corresponding to the "Dragon and Phoenix Bring Auspiciousness" sculpture, making the entire square melt into a warm, rich green.
