The Xiang River flows through Xiangtan City for a total of 61 km in its north and south sections. It is navigable year-round for 300–500 ton vessels. In spring and summer, the waves surge and muddy billows fill the air; in autumn, the water is as green as a mirror, with "eagles striking the vast sky and fish gliding in the shallow depths." On both banks, willows are like silk threads, and the scenery is beautiful.
