The Shaoshan Galaxy Tourism Area is located within Xiangxiang City. Its main body is the Shaoshan Irrigation District. The area effectively controls a river basin area of 5,050 square kilometers, with a normal water storage level of 66.5 meters and a reservoir capacity of 21 million cubic meters. Its administrative area involves four counties (cities) and districts: Shuangfeng, Xiangxiang, Shaoshan, and Xiangtan, with a planned scope of about 81 square kilometers. The scenic area includes Yangtan Scenic Area, Feilian Guanwanqing Scenic Area, Sanxiang Fenliu Scenic Area, and Yintian Scenic Area. The tourism area is mainly based on drifting and is a comprehensive irrigation-type tourism area integrating leisure, vacation, entertainment, and sightseeing.
As the main body of the tourism area, the Shaoshan Irrigation District began construction in July 1965. Under the leadership of Comrade Hua Guofeng, then President of the State, an army of 100,000 laborers, with the heroic spirit of "Yu Gong had the will to move mountains, and we have the will to tunnel through them," took only ten months to successfully complete the main canal and the north main canal and smoothly bring water for irrigation. For more than thirty years, the irrigation district has irrigated 1 million mu of farmland within about 2,500 square kilometers across seven counties (cities): Shuangfeng, Xiangxiang, Xiangtan, Ningxiang, Shaoshan, Wangcheng, and Yuhu. It also has comprehensive functions including industrial water supply, power generation, shipping, flood control and drainage, and aquaculture. It is the largest water diversion irrigation project in Hunan Province. Within the irrigation district, the projects are majestic and imposing, the canals crisscross, the surrounding hills are layered in green, the water is like a mirror, the environment is elegant, and the air is fresh. It is an ideal place for outside investors to develop. Its location is superior. Around the Shaoshan Galaxy Tourism Area are famous tourist attractions such as Shaoshan, Wushi, Hualinglou, the Former Residence of Zeng Guofan, and Shuifumiao. Within the area are antique scenic spots and historic sites such as Yunmen Temple, Chugong Temple, Dongshan Academy, the bronze statue of Huang Gonglue, and the Confucian Temple. It is also close to Changsha, Ningxiang, Zhuzhou, Xiangtan, Shaoshan, Shuangfeng, and other places, all within 100 kilometers. Transportation is convenient. National Highway 320, the Xiang-Qian Railway, and the under-construction Shangrui Expressway pass through, and the canals within the area crisscross, closely linking the various scenic spots together.
