The reservoir intercepts the Lian River and is named after the Shuifu Temple (Water Mansion Temple) located at the junction of Xiangxiang, Shuangfeng, and Loudi where the dam stands. Completed in 1958, it has a lake surface area of 44.6 km². At the normal water storage level of 94 m, the reservoir capacity reaches 560 million m³. The narrowest part of the reservoir surface is about 10 m, and the widest section is 3.5 km. With rippling blue waves, misty haze, and reflections of mountain ranges, it is refreshing to the heart and mind. There are islands in the water and scenery on the islands.

Within the reservoir area there are 34 islands surrounded by water on all sides, the largest covering 70 hectares. The most famous are the egrets in the reservoir area—thousands upon thousands of egrets reside on the islands year-round. When the egrets all fly back to the island, Egret Island glistens silver, a truly spectacular sight. This reservoir is also the main water source for irrigating tens of thousands of hectares of farmland in the Shaoshan Irrigation District, irrigating 1.04 million hectares in this city. It also has a power station with a total installed capacity of 30,000 kW. It is a large comprehensive reservoir for irrigation, power generation, navigation, aquaculture, and tourism.
