Moon Island

Moon Island

Moon Island is located on the west bank of the Xiang River, 14 kilometers northwest of downtown Changsha, Hunan. It is a newly developed tourist spot known for its beautiful natural scenery. Shaped like a slender crescent moon sipping from the Xiang River, its silvery-white sandbanks at both ends kiss the blue waves. Situated 10 kilometers north of the city on the west side of the Xiang River's main channel, it faces Eyang Mountain to the east and Gu Mountain to the west. Originally named Yaobu Island, it was called Xujia Island after a Xu family farmed here in the Ming Dynasty, and gained its charming name in recent years for its crescent shape.

Moon Island is located on the west bank of the Xiang River, 14 kilometers northwest of downtown Changsha, Hunan. It is a newly opened tourist spot featuring beautiful natural scenery. The island is like a slender crescent moon sucking at the Xiang River waters, with silvery-white sand beaches at both ends kissing the blue waves of the Xiang. Moon Island is located 10 kilometers north of the urban area, on the west side of the main navigation channel of the Xiang River, facing Eyang Mountain to the east and bordering Gushan to the west. It was originally named Yaobu Island; because a family surnamed Xu cultivated land here in the Ming Dynasty, it was called Xujia Island; and because it is shaped like a crescent moon, in recent years it gradually acquired this charming elegant name. The island is 4,980 meters long, with an average width of about 400 meters and a maximum width of more than 800 meters, covering a total area of more than 3,300 mu. It belongs to three natural villages in Xingcheng Town, Wangcheng County.

The island has an elevation of 32 meters. In 1975, a ring-shaped embankment was built, with a perimeter of 8,150 meters and an embankment height of 38.5 meters. Within the embankment there are more than 2,400 mu of land, abundantly producing rice, sesame, melon seeds, peanuts, and more. Economic trees such as citrus, mulberry, and water bamboo are also planted. Outside the embankment there are more than 900 mu of land planted with weeping willows, Italian poplars, reeds, and so on.

There are more than 1,300 villagers on the island. Since the 1980s, planning for a resort village began, and it has already begun to take shape, with more than 120 mu of ornamental garden plants such as sago palms and Buddhist pines cultivated. Wang Shoudao and Bo Yibo each wrote inscriptions: "Develop Moon Island, Build a Resort Village" and "Moon Island Paradise." At present, foreign investment is being actively introduced to build an international resort area, including scenic areas such as a forest park, amusement park, water activity center, golf course, commercial center, and resort center. Visitors will be hidden among the green trees, enjoying a leisurely vacation life and fully appreciating the pastoral scenery.
