In the west of Ningxiang County lies Mount Dawei, more than 800 meters above sea level and more than 70 kilometers in circumference. It is called the chief of all mountains in Ningxiang and is also the natural dividing line among the three counties of Ningxiang, Anhua, and Taojiang. Because the mountain is high and the forests dense, with mist and clouds rising, it has a majestic momentum, hence the reputation of "Dawei Reaching the Clouds." It is said that Liuyang also has a Mount Wei. When Pei Xiu, a Tang dynasty prime minister, served as Hunan observing commissioner, he specially called Liuyang's Mount Wei "Little Mount Wei" and Ningxiang's Mount Wei "Great Mount Wei."
On Mount Dawei is the ancient Buddhist temple Miyin Temple, built in the Tang Dynasty. In the temple is the Ten Thousand Buddha Hall, which preserves many artistic treasures of the Buddhist world. In the mountain are the former residence of the great Tang dynasty poet-monk Qiji, Qiji Hut, as well as Pei Xiu's Tomb, Xianren Vision, Luhua Waterfall, Laimu Bing, and Baiguo Hantan, the scenic spots among the Eight Views of Mount Wei. Zhou Zaiwu, a provincial graduate of the early Qing, wrote a poem titled "Dawei Reaching the Clouds": "Great Dawei rises a hundred thousand zhang, above it joins the floating clouds. The mountain's form remains ever unchanged, while clouds fly east and again west. When clouds depart, the mountain has wind; when clouds arrive, the mountain has rain. Wind and rain have no fixed time; such is the mood of the clouds."
