Lion Gazing at Mountain Mist

Lion Gazing at Mountain Mist

One and a half kilometers east of Ningxiang County lies a stone hill called Shiyi. The county gazetteer describes it as 'two hills embracing, like a mighty lion panting after battle. The lion peak crouches by the Wei River, with misty green colors abounding, and at dawn and dusk there is often fine atmosphere.' Ming poet Liu Duan climbed Shigu Mountain several times, gazing up at the mountain wind and down at the Wei River, lingering unwilling to leave, and wrote: 'East of the city is a famous mountain, crouching like a lion by the riverbank. Misty light floats up and down, mirroring the Jade Pool waters. After rain the cloudy mountain is wet, wanting to fly but unable to rise. Leaning on my staff in the evening clear, a light breeze stirs the purple hills.'

One and a half kilometers east of Ningxiang County seat, there is a stone hill named Shiyi. The county gazetteer says: "Two hills embrace each other, like mighty lions after fighting gasping for breath. The lion peak crouches and sits, bordering the Wei River, with misty green spreading in confusion; morning sun and evening glow often produce much fine atmosphere." The Ming dynasty poet Liu Duan climbed Shigu Mountain several times, looking up at the mountain wind and down at the Wei River, lingering and unwilling to return, and wrote a poem: "East of the city is a famous mountain, like a lion crouching by the riverbank. Misty light floats above and below, reflecting the jade pool water. After rain the cloudy mountain is wet, wanting to fly but unable to rise. Leaning on my staff in the evening clearing, a light wind throws the mountain purple into disorder."
